How comprehensive are they? Has anyone had an instance where it passed their tests and it was still bad?

At Advance Auto they have a tester that runs it through about 8 different test. It is possible that it will test good on their tester and then fail in your car when it is hot. That is a problem with the ignition modules, they will often work fine when cold and fail after they get warm.
