carb to tpi

I plan over winter to change my car from a non-cc q-jet to a tpi system. But I have hit a couple snags in my thought process. My car is a 87 lg4 auto and I plan on using the complete fuel injection system from the fuel tank to tpi system off a 90 camaro. What problems will I run into with this setup? since my car doesn't have a knock sensor what do I do about that can I leave it disconnected will it screw with the computer? What about the wiring to the guages? I plan on purchasing a prom burner so I will be able to burn my own chips.

I did that conversion 2 years ago.
I bought a new knock sensor for the block, had to get an Alternator bracket for the TPI manifold, you might have Serpentince setup so you might not have any issues with that.

If you get the entire fuel system from a 90 TPI car, you should have no real issues at all.
VSS may be a problem for you, do you have a camaro or Firebird?

This is what my conversion looked like,

before, (I had already converted from the CC quadrajet to an Edelbrock setup)

after,

I have a 87 camaro. The car only has an alternator and a power steering pump and is a v-belt setup. Will I have to do anything to my stock wiring like the guages or is the computer wired with only fuel injection stuff (stand alone)?

Get whatever you can from the donor car just to be safe, what you don't use can be sold or tossed in the refuse.
You'll also need new circuits for the injectors, elec fan(s) and something else I know I'm forgetting.
Gauge wiring is irrelevant to whatever induction is on the motor. All the gauge wiring runs to the bulkhead independnt of the ECM harness.

I thought the fan and injectors where all part of the same wiring harness. I plan on taking everything from the car: fuel system from the tank to the injectors, tpi setup, harness, ecm, and dual fans.

Anything else I should grab?

Yes and no. Yes they are part of the ECM harness but, they have a 'dedicated' circuit in the fusepanel as well to supply power to them. The ECM only controls ground to most all switched functions (i.e. FP, fan relay, injectors, solenoids..)
There are a few more circuits on the fuse panel of a FI car over a carb'd. You either have to put an add-on fuse panel or wire in one from the FI car. In certain cases, it's just easier to add the extra circuits into the existing fuse pane rater than redo the whole thing.
In the case of my bud's 72 truck, it was easiest (and really needed too) to just use the entire interior/underhood harness since it's literally a 3rdgen in a truck wrapper.

Ok that makes more sense. I guess when I get the harness I can figure out what needs to be done as far as wiring.

where did you get that air intake setup, it looks cool as hell.

I did a LG-4 to tpi, one problem you'll encounter is where the ecm's wiring goes into the firewall the tpi's bulk head connector is a little larger, might be a pain making the hole larger since it's a camaro, mine had the fender vents there (trans am) your alternator if like mine will also lack sufficient amps to supply enough power.

good luck on your conversion though

I got the intake used from a member on the board. It is an SLP unit, $299.99.

My LG4 and TPI Bulkhead connectors were the same size, fit perfectly into the hole.
I ran the same alternator on my TPI that I had on the LG4, seemed to work great. the one I had was 80 or 90 amps.

I'm certainly not saying it's not true but. I believe most bulkhead on GM cars are basicall the same size. On camaro's and firebirds it shouls all be dead up the same since the shells of 2 are identical and it wouldn't make since (cost effective) to make different stampings just for a bulkhead connector.

The MPFI fusepanel/bulkhead I used on my friends '72 truck fit the thrucks original opening perfectly...

your referring to the chassis electrical bulkhead connector, I was referring to the ECM's bulkhead connector
