Fuel pump relay

Hmm. I thought that if you disco'd the fuel pump relay...

the car shouldn't start... I'm trying to find a non-invasive spot to put a cutoff switch

Fuel pump gets power from 2 places, the relay and the oil sender. The pump will prime when the key is first turned on to bring up pressure then it shuts off and after the engine starts re-energizes and feeds power to the pump. Also, after 4 psi oil pressure is reached a switch in the oil sender feeds 12 volts in parallel with the relay to also run the pump. Thats why when the relay goes bad you have to crank the engine several times to start. The starter turns the engine and develops the 4 psi. You will need to find the wire that feeds the pump in the chassis AFTER the parallel circuit and use it for a fuel cutoff.

ok, the oil sender being the oil pump?

it's not something (with the term sender) to be in any of the manuals I've read..

thanks for the info, just made my life a whole lot easier..
any idea what gauge that wire is?

I bought 14 and 16... hopefully 1 of them is right

Sender is the unit that feeds the oil guage, not the pump. It is a dual function sender, i.e. it runs the oil pressure guage as well as having a switch that closes at 4 psi to run the pump in conjunction with the pump relay.

now I just have to figure out which unit is the oil sender and where those wires go...

Looks like it comes right out of the harness
and I didn't see it anywhere on the wiring diagram

I've looked at the manual, and at the engine, but damned if I could figure out on the engine which is the oil sender...

Looks like it's at the back of the engine, on the left hand side (if you are facing forward) but i can't find anything.

Next question, the wiring for the fuel pump, does it go along the transmission hump? I found a set of wires that goes through the body right between the rear passenger seats.

Look for a tan/wht wire, thats the 12 volt feed to the pump. Putting a cutoff there should disable the fuel pump.
