Dimming neon lights

Is it possible to dim neon lights, or is it an on or off only deal? The reason I ask is two fold. One, I've replace all my interior lights with neon tubes, and wanted to install theatre lighting, but wasn't sure if it would work and/or damage the tubes. The other reason is I'm thinking of adding a second set of undercar lights and wanted to wire it so that one color would fade out as the other faded in. Has anybody tried this? What sort of resistance would I be looking at needing to apply? Thanks, Joe

Sure, I've done it before (although it wasn't on a car, I had some neon tubes and hooked 'em up to a variac) ..you can try using a variable resistor (a potentiometer). try something to vary your voltage anywhere from 6 - 13.5vdc
