Viper 790XV alarm
Does anyone have one of these? How well does it work for you and how do you like it? Also, how much have you seen them for? Should i go with another alarm system? What should the cost be to install a car alarm? Usually, b/c not all alarms are the same, i know. I was quoted $160 for this install. I think thats a bit too high though. I don't need answers to all the questions, just some info please. Thanks for your time.

The 790xv is dei's two way paging alarm & remote start system. Max range is around 1/4 mile, but if you're in the city don't be suprised is you have an effective range of less then 400 feet. Also, you cannot mate regular one way remote controls to the unit.
A thirdgen car alarm & remote start install guide is avaliable here:

Really, 1/4 mile!? Hmm, maybe i should go for the range extender for it. Thanks a lot for that link too. Did you write that up? Looks like really good info to use, if i do it myself that is. Are you famillar with installing alarms? If so, would you say that $160 is good for an install? To me it is starting to seem like it b/c i have called a bunch of shops that are certified with Viper, and it seems like the going rate is $240. One guy wanted $340! Thanks a lot for your time-Bryan

Most car audio shops do not want to install equipment that they did not sell. That's why some of the prices are on the high side and it seems like the shops are trying to price themselves out of the market.
Install price will vary widely among shops, so will the quality of the install. Have seen some installs where the alarm brain falls out of the dash when the fuse box cover is removed. And others where the wires obstruct the movement of the gas & brake pedals. And yet others where mechanics have commented that they were suprised that the car had not caught fire and burned.
If this is your first time installing an alarm & remote starter, plan on spending a couple days getting it wired into the car and configured to your liking. You'll learn a lot in the process, but it can also be quite frustrating too.

Tell me about it! I am still in the middle of wiring my whole guage cluster of Auto meter guages. I am waiting on a 15 pre wired plug for this set up. I have an 86 shop manual so i should be ok. Just time consuming, thats all. I think i just might do it myself. Thanks for your help again-Bryan
