Will this Kill Switch Idea Work??
Ok here is my Idea for my kill switch:
There is a wire under the dash that connencts the starter to the ignition switch this is a yellow wire in my 1991 RS. My plan is to purchase a momentary switch and place it behind the carpet in a hidden location. This switch would be spliced on this yellow wire so you couldn't start the car. I want this switch compleatly hidden even from the people riding with me- just incase they want to take my car for a joy ride.
I want this switch to be abel to be pressed and have about 1 sec or so to start the car. Is this possible???
And where can I get a switch On-line? Does it have to be momentary?(What does that even mean?)
Thanks

Momentary means it is on while you hold it in only. There are no latching mechanisms inside.
Sounds like a sound idea. Check the current carrying capacity of this wire before you plumb a switch in. If it pulls 5 amps, get a switch that can cope with quite a bit more. The specs are normally written on the switch casing.
Of course, if someone really wants your car they will short across the terminals at the starter anyway. But the inconvenience factor applies here.
There is another reason for doing this.
Picture this.
You are out with your girlfriend (or boyfriend!), just had a nice dinner out, some sexy dancing and it is time to go home. There is an hotel nearby (motel perhaps) and ,conveniently, your car won't start. This could mean a cosy night in that hotel while you wait for your breakdown truck/friend/mate to arrive the next morning. But the car will start because you had heat soak and had to wait for it to cool down ALL NIGHT!!
Didn't work for me though! Even though I have a Wife and 2 kids now! Still manged to hold on to my 2 Camaros though!!!
Andy.

thats exactly what i did man.. go to Murrays or like Autozone they have these fat "Ignition momentary Switch" its big and black. that wire you speak of....when coming down from the steering column is it really small then it goes through a connection and it comes out big? if so thats the wire i used. anyway that should work fine, thats exactly what i did. send me a msg if u need any help.
ps. be sure to use a crimping tool on the wires incase you accidently cut a wire that wont kill the ignition....

You can also find a pretty good variety of switches from supply companies...
www.grainger.com
www.mcmaster.com
www.mscdirect.com
If something is a little more of a specialty item than you can find at the local places, they've usually got something that'll work.

HamSpiced- thats the same wire that I'm going to do this to. The reason I asked for places on the net because the nearest Autozone is 75 miles away and we only have two small auto parts places around here and they have to order just above anything you need. For instance- my buddy and I went looking for a air cleaner for him- we were unablt to find 1 in stock
Thanks for you all of your help:lala:

Hows the car working now that you tracked down the problem??? You could mount a HEAVY DUTY momentary (push on) switch somewhere in discrete under your carpet... u would have to step on it and turn the key in order to start the car. I just plan on putting in a manual button down by my radio with a bunch of other switches, fan, turn of all lights in back of car, etc. So in my case, the key would be in on, and you would need to press teh button. Most of my idiot friends cant start a car normally, let alone press a button. My one dumb *** friend took 10 minutes to start my car, first hes like "choke what" then he didnt know he had to give it gas.... . i need new friends. any way good luck.

well... as soon as i get my pics develope dill post them up.. all i have is a large button momentary switch, you can get it at any hardware store.. just make sure it can support a 12v charge. ill post a lil pic in paint of what i did... its not very clear but its what i did and then i just put the finished thing behind the carpet to the left of all the pedals. its really inconspicuous and the button doesnt stick out any so no one knows its there.

sure.. i thought i sent u a pm that explained this but ok il try... andy your lucky cause ill give you one of my great paint drawings cause im poor and cant afford a digital camera. the momentary switch is called a 12v always off push on switch. you can get it at autozone, murrays, aco etc. i used 16guage wire cause i didnt feel it needed to be any different.

sure...
all it is, is a piece of 1/4 inch plastic cut in a retangle to look like a pedal. then there was a hole drilled near the top of it and i set the momentary switch in side of it and bolted it on. then i just put the pedal setup behind the carpet where the "dead pedal" is.

Re: Will this Kill Switch Idea Work??
The type of switch they are setting up only controls power for cranking. It is needed only to start the car, not for the engine to continue running. Some of us use switches connected to the distributor power instead, which does require power in order for the car to stay running.
