Ignition switch wire colors

I am trying to hook up an auto start but I can't find a good wiring diagram for the steering column. I have been to 3 different sites each show different colors for the wires. Does anyone know which wire is which? I think the problem is I am not finding the right diagram for my car. I have a 1989 Camaro IROC 350 with VATS.

(Snip) I have a 1989 Camaro IROC 350 with VATS.

I am probably not going to tell you what you want to hear, but I will say it anyway.

Don't do it!!

In order to install a remote starter, you will have to go ahead and disable VATS. VATS will save your car from any punk that tries to steal it. It has already saved mine once. I was thinking about doing the same thing, but one smashed steering column later I have a different mind set. Now that I have seen how easy it is to steal a GM product of this age, I would not recomend doing what you are planing.

Just trying to help...

Later,
Joe

I bought an aftermarket VATS disabler that only disables the VATS when doing a auto start. If someone tries to steel my car the VATS will still be active.

Does anyone know the color codes of the wires?

I had VATS disabled with my remote starter. They tried to steal her, didn't happen because the Avital avistart6500 has a starter kill that is much more effective than VATS. VATS is the easiest thing to disable, I can bypass it in less than 5 minutes and that's just enough time for anyone to steal a car. Don't just use VATS, I have a list of a hundred ways to keep your car in the same place. Starter kill switchs, slow blown fuses on the ignition wire bypass, you name it, it's easy. Fuel pump switch, tranny position switch (car won't start if it doesn't know what gear it's in), ignition switch, starter relay switch, it's very easy. I repeat, do NOT trust only in VATS, it only takes 1 tool, 2 fingers, and a $.50 piece of electronics to bypass. I'm not aloud to post how and I won't, just don't think VATS is a magic shield. True, punks won't steel it. Auto theives will, and everybody knows that punks leave the car for dead, theives rip it apart at a chop shop and rid the plates and vin, you'll never see your car again. Good luck and just spend a few hours Sunday making a hidden switch for a starter kill!

Nice site!!! But I didn't find anything oh the steering column and what each wire is coming out of it. Can anyone tell me the color or each wire and what that wire does for the wires coming out of the steering column?

One thing I forgot to mention to 89 Iroc Z on the above post is that the TRUNK PIN SWITCH wire-orange/black,is for 85-92 models. 82-84 model years instead have a WHITE wire at the same location. And I also left out the TRUNK RELEASE wire, which can be found at the switch as a brown wire that sends a negative signal to the release relay.

All you have do is find a radio shack. Lol. Get an experimenters board and a trim pot. Find out your residence of your key set the trim pot to that resistance. Locate the key reader wires under the steering column. It'll be a special two wire plug. Extend those wires so you can put your experimenters board in your center console. Then hook up your two wires between the two pins of your trim pots swipers where you Read your resistance. Now you can change your lock cylinder to one without the little thingy in the key. So now you can get keys made anywhere. Now you have permanent bypass for the system. I have this knowledge from converting my 89 Camaro's system. Here's the Kool thing, whenever you park your car grab your experimenters board from console and put in your pocket and your car is now disable. It'll turn over but never start. Also after you set to proper resistance super glue the trim pot screw so it doesn't move. I've included the resistance key blank chart above and use the design resistance column. You see I had to use the chart and my multimeter and test every resistance until my car started. With the trim pot method you can have the exact resistance because using resisters can be tricky and **** you off. You never need to worry about losing the resister in your key because that's what happened to me. Hope this guide helps you. Please don't cut any of ignition wires and throw that vats bypass module away

Re: Ignition switch wire colors

LOL this poor old VAT system...

We (GM Engineering) used to purchase an analog 10k ohm potentiometer (variable resistor) with two small wire leads on a GM ignition key...
The key was cut as if it was a very worn-out old key...

Stuck the key in the ignition lock-cylinder, twisted the **** on the potentiometer back and forth slowly...
and in less than 2 minutes has the car running.

Theft-Testing like this is eventually what led up to the PASS-KEY 3 systems that actually works quite well.
