Is it very difficult to change this switch? Have not had the car (91 RS) very long and have not had a chance to work with it much. Thanks. BTW - great forum, have already picked up a lot.

my opinion is big pain in the *** ...
have to remove the steering wheel and worry about the re-alignment of it when re-installing.
Need a couple of specialty tools for removing the wheel and compressing the spring (for the locking device when off) and reusing the latter tool when replacing the spring.
But mentally...easy job.

it is easily acomplished by anyone who know knows the difference between a torx and a phillips screwdrivers.

What exactly is your problem? Are you not able to select between hi/lo because the switch will not engage, or are you able to engage it, and the switch just does not work?

Thanks for the replys. Kam - to be honest I am not totally sure. Got the car from my younger brother. He said that the lights did not want to switch back and forth, and that a couple of times he lost all headlights. Have been enjoying the car too much to get into that until now. I at least have low beams. Will hopefully have some time this weekend to tinker with it. Have gotten several good ideas from this forum to try out. Later.

On a T/A there is a switch box halfway down on top of the stering colume that the acuater rod hooks to that turns your light to bright/low
right next to your egnition switch box, it could have move down or screws come loose if it is like a T/A. Hope this will help some.

On my car, the wire that is for the cruise control was physically interfering with the hi/lo beam actuating motion of pulling the stick back towards you. i just pushed it out of the way and all is well now.

Checked the switch out. Only seems to do it if the wheel is tilted down. Otherwise, works fine. Thanks again for the help. May get into it more in the future. Sully

Sounds like the hi-beam switch is out of kilter on the column. Mine was the opposite - only worked with the wheel tilted up. The switch is located at about the 11:00 position of the column (facing the column), way down in there by the fuse block. It has (2) 1/4" screws on it that are a pain to get to, but all you gotta do is break them loose and adjust the switch and tighten them back down. It's easier to get to if you let the column down with the (2) 13mm nuts under the gauge cluster...

OK, I finally had the same experience that my brother had with the car. Driving down the road Saturday night with the high beams on. All of a sudden, they start flickering back and forth between high and low( even the indicator on the dash was switching) and would then go out. Switched back to low beam and they were just fine. Thunderstick, I still am going to check the switch like you said. Didn't get too this weekend, spent Sat. flushing out the cooling system then most of the day Sunday working on the girlfriends 85 Z28.

Ladderman, I would go ahead and replace the switch while your down there. Make sure the dealer doesn't try to sell you the multifunction stalk switch ( over $100 ), the dimmer switch sould be less than 20. It's is a bit of a pain in the rear to get to, and since your car is 10 years old, you don't want to have to do it again any time soon.
