Painless wiring harness. R they really painless & worth the $

I have a 88 305 TPI and im considering getting a complete engine wire harness for it. I ve heard alot of complaints about them have any of u guys had any experiences with them, if not do any of u know a site or phone number of a place that sells engine harnesses for mass air flow. I know summit or jeggs sells painless. Is there another aftermarket engine harness around.

I have the 60103 on my car, and I get alot of questions about it, and here is what I tell everybody. (due to the amount of questions, its easier to copy and past the origianal, then retype over and over!)

Jay, Painless isn't lying to you when they say they have all the factory
hookups, they indeed do. What they don't tell you, is that its for "custom"
applications requiring you to run the wiring harness through the firewall
right near the motor. I tried to use it as a "factory replacement" and ran
it through the original "passthrough" behind the passenger side fender.
This caused my wiring harness to be 2.5 feet to short. Threre is a "point"
in the wiring harness where the distriubter wires break out, and the two
banks for the injectors and other sensors for the Throttle body area. This
MUST be behind the distributer for it to hook up properly. Unfortunatly for
me, running it through the passthrough caused this "point" in the harness to
be in front of my blower motor. I had to cut the entire harness in half,
and solder in 2.5 feet of EVERY SINGLE wire, to move this "point" where it
needs to be.

Painless also hooks the fuses up differently. It uses a single fuse for the
ENTIRE harness. Instead of the factory 2 fuses for the injector banks, one
for the ECM, etc... You have just one. So if you ever develop a short and
blow the fuse, you will have the ENTIRE wiring harness to inspect to locate
the short, instead of just the effected circuit if it was a factory harness.

Painless also has you mount the fuel pump relay, EST bypass connector, MAP
sensor and Fuse under the passenger side dash. First of all, it makes it
very inconvenient to set timing. It also makes you have to run like a 3
foot vacuum line to the MAP sensor, which may scew readings. Instead, I ran
three wires from where painless wanted you to mount the MAP sensor, all the
way up to the firewall, and now my MAP sensor only uses an 8 inch vacuum
line.

If I had to do it all again, I would find a used factory harness. I hope
this helps.

BT

Yeah it sort of helps. I have the original harness and it dosent look that good of shape. And im guessing i could buy a factory harness from a junked car. Problem is alot of people will not part the harness mainly cause its part of the motor when they sell just the motor. Do u think GM still sell the factory harness.

GM probably doesn't have the harness available, and if they did, it would be big bucks. Many places will sell the harness seperatly, like thirdgenparts.com. You can also run searches on ebay, I see alot of harnesses there.

I hear there are some aftermarket wiring harnesses that are identical to the factory harness, but I don't recall who makes them, I'm sure somebody will step in and help.

I dont know if this helps or not, but gm still sells a harness for speed density tpi under pn 12080890. I know yours is maf, but surly they still sell the mafs also. As far as the price is concerned Mauro Giambruno's tech article on this site "How To Convert your 1990-92 Camaro TBI To Speed Density TPI", states that Dal Lambert (Im guessing he's referring to Dal Slabaugh at Lambert Buick, Pontiac, and GMC in Ackron, Ohio?) sells the harness for $241. Sounds like a good price to me for OEM. Like I said, I know this is a speed density harness and yours is maf, but surly the price difference between the two is not much, if they still offer the maf harness.

Anyways, I hope this helps and makes since. Its really late and I feel like Im rambling. Good luck!
