HELP... need diode for alternator after gauge swap!?!?

I replaced the gauges in my dash a few weeks ago. I thought I replaced the choke light with a bulb too... but it doesn't light up when I first start the car. I thought nothing of it until last weekend.

I figured my alt died and it drained my battery. Evidently that may not be the case. Someone told me (and it makes sense) that the alt doesn't "know" the car is on.

All I can say for sure is that my choke works. Also, the new alt I got last week is NOT working (volts with car on is 11.5V...12.5 with car off).

He also said something about using a diode to the alt from a switched source. Can I do something to get it running correctly?

one of the factory wires that go to the small plug in the side of the alternator has a diode in it. Sometimes that diode burns out and the alternator no longer charges.

That's what I am sort of thinking too. RB suggested the correct diode... where do I locate the old one?

IIRC- The plug has a black and a red wire. The red wire only goes from the plug to the terminal that has a bolt and is covered by a red plastic cap. Another wire goes from that to the pos terminal on the battery.

The black wire comes from the computer harness somewhere, should I install the diode to a switched source there? I don't run the computer anymore...

The diode is located inside the alternator, it is located between the rectifier bridge and the voltage regulator. I can send you a pic if you want.

ODB, you may be confusing a diode with the nichrome resistance wire that is used in some alternator configurations to power the field winding. The resistance wire isolates the alternator from the other accessories powered from the same source.
