Daytime Running Lights
I want to make a daytime Running lights (DRL) setup on my car. New vettes have them & i love them! I know it makes me more visible to the cops, but it keeps the grammas aware of me too! Would this setup work on a 3rd gen? (it's for a 4th)

You might want to try something like this: http://www.jcwhitney.com/productnoitem.jhtml?CATID=5139

I designed a simple to build DRL circuit that Willie is using on his '87 IROC. E-mail him at tplsz87@cs.com if you would like a copy.

By meaning DRL like the new 'vettes, i meant the parking lights (front orange lights) not the headlights. that would be terrible in a Firebird since the lights pop-up and add tons of drag.

I like that first link there, the one for the 4thgen. Yes, that should work in any normal car. Of course, the wire colors will likely be different, so you'll have to verify them yourself with a meter or test light.
Instead of the toggle switch in that setup, I would wire a third relay into the parking lights circuit, so the DRLs would shut off on their own when you switch the light on.
Also, factory DRLs do not have a "light sensing photocell" that I know of. However, they are wired so that they turn off (A) when the car's lights are switched on, and (B) when the parking brake is applied.

Good idea Chris. But i'm an electrical retard, and that seems easy enough 4 me at the moment. I'll just buy a toggle that lights up when it's turned on so i'll know the circuit is complete.

I installed a relay on the parking light circut in my Elcamino. It was very simple. Now whenever I turn my ign. on, the pariking lights come on. You also could just hook the relay to the front amber lights. And to add to that, just put an inline switch before the relay, so you can turn them off.

Take a trip to Canada and go to a couple of wrecking yards. DRLs were manditory in Canada since 1991. On Firebirds they have a sensor that will cause the headlights to also come up and I find them to be a PITA.
I disabled mine by yanking the fuse because at sunset the headlights kept popping up and down. When the weather is warmer, I will bypass the sensor with a resistor to keep the "bright ambers" on, but keep the headlights down.

I added some to my '88 TA, they kind of look like Corvette lights. Check them out at my site in my sig.

What you could do.....
DRLs are usually not as bright as the parking light bulbs so if you put in a correct sized resistor (or even a varible resistor) and mount in the engine compartment (one not much different than the one for the dash lights).

The links on your page don't work [the folders]
I'm gonna jump into the DRL's this weekend, thinkin of putting in a resistor, guess i'll ask my dad about this stuff since he studied to be an electrical engineer in college

I like the look of the 4th gen parking lights. Is there any way to make mine brighter so they can actually be seen in the daytime?
