OBD II: Can you test it the same way?

I'm just wondering. I just checked for codes on my 91' firebird and my mom's 99 F250 superduty 7.3L powerstroke diseil just recently threw a code. I'm wondering if I can use a paper clip to check for codes.

I think the obd2 computers require a diagnostic computer to check for codes. I wouldn't go sticking any paperclips in until i was sure.
