Anyone have a schematic for a cable for the ALDL to a laptop???

I just got a laptop and I want to start logging data. I don't want to spend 60 bucks for a cable, however. My friend is an electrical engineer, so he can make a cable if he has the schematic. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You'll need to use Moates' sofware. The one posted above works for 160 baud i.e. TBI and older ECM. Search for Moates' software and follow the link. At the bottom of the page he has a diagram for his software.

better link

Here's a better link:

Get the software here:

http://ice.prohosting.com/moates/gmecm/index.html

The scematics LINKS are at the bottom of the page right under the place where it says "Further information on Software:"
Click on MAX232, or MAX 233 or Two transistor.

Which one of those is for our TPI cars? It looks like a couple of those are OBD II. Thanks.

Do you mean WinALDL ?

If you do then it is because the directorys are differnt and the instocx.bat does not support XP yet. You have to install the ocx file manually to make it work.

Copy the file msflxgrd.ocx to the c:\windows\system32 directory.

Then click [Start] and [Run]. In the entry field you type:
regsvr32.exe msflxgrd.ocx
and click [OK]

The dialog should say that it succeded.

Since two-way communication is required for 8192-baud, you will need to use at least the two-transistor design. I don't think the 1-transistor design that works with WinALDL for 160 will work on 8192.

If anyone knows different, please pass along. To my knowledge, at least the two-transistor (no personal experience, only MAX232/233) is needed for 8192 with my program, at least I think so.

I recommend the MAX232 circuit. The 500ns switching times of the trasistors stresses CMOS inputs.
cheers,
