Looking For Insight and Help (Think I got Screwed)

Hello All,

I just got my car back from the Dyno yesterday and supposedly had it professionally tuned. Bottom line is i feel like it should have more for what it is. I was just wondering if anyone thinks its possible to pull the info off of the chip that the tuner burned to see if it looks right? And if so, would someone be nice enough to tell me how. I just don't want to screw up the chip i paid 400 for. (Those 12 extra ponies are the most expensive ones i have gotten yet)

The guy after 13 runs only got 12 more HP than my chip. And the only thing i did to the chip i burned and put in there was: injector size, fuel pressure, vats, pollution stuff. I was told the spark table would be aggressive for my heads. I am thinking that he didn't touch the spark tables, by the way the curves look.

The bin i put on there was an older stock corvette bin. The older aluminum headed one. I looked and looked for bins and that was the one that seemed to fit the best. And it ran decent, just thought it would have a bit more.

To drive 3 hours one way and to leave with a car that runs more or less the same, kinda blows. I am just looking to see if its something the tuner did or something i did when installing all this stuff brand new.

If someone could tell me if its possible to read a chip from a tuner shop please let me know. Oh yeah, and the chip is still in there on the moats adapter, so I'm hoping its possible and i can figure out what's going on. Sorry for ranting, but coming way short of what other people seem to have gotten doesn't make me very happy. I just took a long time putting this together and thinking it was right, it's kinda mind blowing to know that all these parts that are supposed to work together puts down as much as some TPI engines.

This is what my car has done and very low miles. More or less got it running and wanted to get it tuned.

.40 over 350
Vortec Heads
Comp Cams XE268 (Cant remember exact specs, can dig up if important)
Speed Pro Pistons (Machinist said it had 10.2:1 comp)
Holley Stealth Ram
Kirban AFPR (45lbs)
Original TPI Throttle Body
Custom Dual Snorkel 3" CAI
Hooker Headers
Custom made exhaust...2.5 inch y pipe into single 3 up over axle and out the back, with some type of race muffler in the stock position.
SVO injectors 26 or 28 I can't remember, they have blue tops.
PLX AFR Gauge

if you have a PROM burner, yes, you could read the PROM he eventually ended up at.

i assume this is on a 1227165 ECM?

The only discussion allowed in this thread is on how to read the BIN. There will be no discussion of what the tuner did.

Using the burner you used to burn the chip originally, you can also read a chip.

Ok thanks for telling me i can read the chip. I just have to figure out how to install the software on my mac....Or borrow a PC, which is looking easier.

Yes it is the 165

And sorry for talking about irrelevant info.

This is what i got when i scanned my chip...

I looked at it compared to an ARAP bin, it looks totally funky.

If someone would could look at what i have and tell me what they think, i would really appreciate it.

I think i could have possibly read the chip wrong?
The spark table and advance is just insane...
I opened it with 6E and 32B...It just doesn't look right.

When i read the chip i used a moates BURN1:
Clicked read chip
Verify chip with buffer
Save
Opened in tunerpro and when what the heck???

Now just trying to make sense of whats going on...thanks again

open up flash and burn, select the 27C128 chip, then do a read/verify/save. should end up with a 16KB BIN.

OK re read my chip like saar said, with the 27c128. I posted below what i ended up with. Still looks erratic to me. At least compared to a stock arap.?? Or am i just doing something wrong again?

May be, read it as a 256kb chip and save the top half. The saving part is done via the buffer values on a save. Many times, even GM, used a 256 kb chip and burned the top half. This is instead of using a 128 kb chip.

The attachments are only 1 byte, not sure what is up with that.

I would do what you suggested if i knew what you meant. Sorry for not knowing much. Just how do i save the top half of a 256kb chip?

Please explain...I am kind desperate to see what the tune looks like compared to the almost stock arap bin that i burned.

I may be a little off topic here, it seems you are getting to the answer for your core question of how to read a bin off a chip.

Looking at your dyno sheet you may not be tooo off track. My setup was basically the same when I did a dyno run and I was maybe 15-20hp higher. I mean don't get too hung up on the numbers. They don't really mean anything unless you're looking for bragging rights. A dyno can be set up differently and therefore read higher or lower. Maybe the dyno on your run was set more conservatively. I installed an aftermarket chip between dyno runs and picked up only 2hp.

And the "butt-dyno" can be misleading. When my car is really dialed in it is so smooth in power delivery it "feel" slow. Til I look down and see how much speed I've picked up.

My thinking is a dyno trip is just the 1 step of a tune. Probably not the best first step anyway. It is only the WOT portion on the tune and unless you only drag race maybe 10% of what you use at the most. Part throttle and cruise takes a ton of work and yields the most return.

But now that you are into chip reading, bin altering, and burning, you can get into it and see if there is anything left to pick up. There are a lot of great tuners out there and many people have forgot more than I'll ever know but no one I mean no one is more motivated to get my tune dialed in than me.

Could someone please give me some pointers on how to correctly read the .bin file of the 27sf512 chip. I thought i was doing it right, however when i open the .bin file in tuner pro and look at some of the values and spark advance table none of the numbers make sense. I am just trying to do some comparing between the pretty much stock arap bin in had in there and what is on there now.

Just find it hard to believe that i took it down there with, what you may as well call a stock arap bin and then when i get it back it has 10 or 12 more hp and the same exact torque and hp curves???? Something is funky and i want to compare, just can't seem to get any kinda of sensible bin to read.

It has to do with the chip & buffer offsets. With a '512 kb chip only the top 1/4 is used. I'm not up on doing this as I don't do it. There should be info on Craig's site and I know it is here too.

Finally got the .bin file read. From what i see nothing that should have been changed is changed???
