Android app for ALDL?

Android app for ALDL?
Is there any sort of app out there to monitor ALDL from an android phone? TunerPRO light to program an ostrich would be awesome. Just got a new phone and was wondering what's available.

Re: Android app for ALDL?
I'm sure it's very do-able, depends on the market. I have one from Innovate for obd2 that runs from a free app on my iphone. wish there was one for obd1 also but every auto maker had there own format, which would make it very car specific.

Re: Android app for ALDL?
There's a guy who did a gnu/linux app for $DF, but I forget which ECM that is.
Link: http://www.steventsnyder.com/linuxaldl.html
I've thought about extending his code to log my 7427, but it's not exactly high on my priority list. Main motivation is to have an in-car linux solid state computer that can just datalog all the time onto a flash drive, instead of having to drive everywhere with my damn laptop.
If linuxaldl supported more masks, it'd be cake to make it work on a droid.

ALDLdroid would be great
Afaik, my DesireHD has USB-Host functionality.
Developers have enabled usb-host some days ago, but currently there are no apps / drivers, but in the future, it will be possible to use usb-mice/keyboards/gamepads/hdd's etc... so maybe a developer can port the linux-aldl-app to android.

Re: Android app for ALDL?
Go to the Marketplace on your Droid, and type in "Torque". Your welcome. Not everything in the world, it's just a simple data displayer, but it also erases check engine codes. 8-)
I wish someone that had the capabilities to do this, DID IT!

Run it BT serial. Or run it on a WiFi/Serial bridge etc. You might need to run a micro ALDL side to digest/buffer and handshake a bit. Either way, you'll need to carve up some Droid-side code. A beginning application structure / compiling project would be nice.

Re: Android app for ALDL?
in a few weeks my friend might give writing the driver a try with my aldl-USB and a micro usb adapter for testing, also possibly a program to go with it... I have no idea how to write a droid app but he thinks it may be possible

Sweet!
Let me know if I can help in any way, I'll be happy to.
I've got an old Droid piece here and various hardware that I could test etc on the T/A when you're ready.

Not from me... been lazy and slammed at work (we had 5 people leave in the last month... my team is only about 25) At least I finally got my new laptop and I got everything installed and a virtual machine set up to do the development on... just haven't done any of the development.

Re: Android app for ALDL?
It might very well be easier to do it that way, however, if it needs something like what was suggested above, that is beyond what I do. I do software and I already own a USB ALDL cable, so I was going to try and make that work instead of banging my head against a wall trying to do the Bluetooth stuff.

Re: Android app for ALDL?
I'd like to see an iPhone app for this. I would LOVE to see a Tuner Pro version, where the logs could be used in TP RT on a PC/Laptop, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. Mark doesn't seem to have any interest in developing hand held device apps for Tuner Pro, and I can't blame him, it's more work, and more support, though I would be willing to pay for a mobile device license in addition to the licence I already have.
For any other program though, I'd have to feel it out to see if it's worth paying for.

Re: Android app for ALDL?
I am thinking of building a data logger out of arduino. Once I get that working, I may create an interface between the arduino and an android phone to data log and have a real time display. I am going to start after the holidays.

Come on guys. Even if it is WIRED I would care NOT if it meant datalogging/monitoring on my phone. Perhaps bluetooth eventually, but only after the core functions have been covered!

FireDemonSiC, if you read what I quoted from AmorgetRS, and my reply, you´ll see that my Bluetooth hint was a suggestion to maybe develop this app easier.

Re: Android app for ALDL?
Rather than an Android app for OBDI (ALDL for the 1227747 or 8746 and ilk).. what's the difficulty level of a translator, that takes the ALDL stream from a 7747 and makes the data fit the OBDII format and feed that into one of the existing OBDII applications?
You could then adapt any number of the each-one-is-unique ALDL data streams as needed..
Either do the translation in a software module that reads in from a serial port (hardwired or bluetooth) and outputs to a device that can be used as the input of the OBDII software (like a FIFO buffer), or get really creative and do it in a microcontroller in-line (or in conjunction with a small BT Serial module that you would attach to the ALDL port).
An OBDI or 7747 based Android "dashboard" is probably a labor of love at this point, rather than a real market..
..I'd still like one, of course.
Edit: and immediately after finishing my thought.. Someone else already thought it though it's still not implemented..

Re: Android app for ALDL?
I've been looking at the Android platform and was wondering about some items. It appears that Java must be used, but I don't understand why C or C++ can't be used.
The other item is the graphics calls. Are they similar enough to the Windows Platform calls where a port from a Windows program to a Android program is feasible?
Thanks in advance for any insight.
RBob.

Re: Android app for ALDL?
C/C++ is a possibility, but likely only under limited circumstances. Certainly "rooted" devices, but even if that isn't the case, the problem (and reason for Java) is distribution of binaries for a multitude of physical platforms. Android runs on ARM, Intel, and other platforms I can't recall which have different requirements for compiled binaries.
Thus, Java as the basis.
Unsure on how similar the graphics calls are. I haven't had to do any C based Windows graphics calls.

Has there been any progress on this? I have an '87 tuned port in a jeep that I want to use my nexus as a dash. I've done a lot of programming, but not for the droid. I'd like to get involved..

Re: Android app for ALDL?
OBDII but pretty cool setup from Innovate. OT-2 is wireless to iPhone with a neat app, can also plug their Wide Band O2 sensor in. When done email the data log to yourself. Also does wireless to laptop but only one channel comes out in Logworks. Was supposed to work with ScanXL Pro but still has an issue.
Maybe it could be used for OBDI with some tweaking? Still need software on other end...

I have a reasonably priced bluetooth/serial adapter I can use with my ALDL cable, but haven't even come close to finding the time to start doing any coding on a Java (Android) dashboard..

Re: Android app for ALDL?
Do you know anything about the obd1 protocols/codes/stream for GM? I've done quite a bit of Java programming and should be able to get a user interface made fairly quickly, but I don't know anything about obd1. I haven't quite got too deep into researching it yet though. Any help on finding the nitty gritty details on obd1 would be immensely helpful toward getting this project moving.

Here´s something to get you started, WinALDL - it´s one of the first OBD-1 ALDL readers, and there´s info on the electrical interface:

Conclusion: One OBDI will not work, each car needs a seperate program.
OBDII has standard PIDs for emmissions, but then still manufacturer enhanced PIDs... all these trick OBDII android iPhone apps I've seen are just the standard OBDII PIDS.

Re: Android app for ALDL?
mcballer52: Have you used some "wired" OBDI-prog like WinALDL or TunerPro to your car?
Tip is to download WinALDL from the site, make (or buy) an serial adapter, and test it. If you read the README file for WinALDL, you´ll se that Jonas (the creator) has added more and more support for different ECU:s and masks. On the other hand, you don´t need to hook it up to you car, just install WinALDL ( I think it´s easier than TunerPro), and browse around in it.
Then you´ll see for example how the tables changes depending on which ECU you choose and so on...
Here´s a link to what I think is the "original ECM-site":
http://diy-efi.org/gmecm/
LOTS of stuff here Many articles are written many years ago by people on this forum!
And under http://diy-efi.org/gmecm/ecm_info/ you will find that ALDL.zip file:

Re: Android app for ALDL?
Shameless self promotion here
I sell a Bluetooth to ALDL (OBD1) adapter. It currently works with Windows and any scanner program that allows you to change the data speed. It does work with TunerPro RT.
I am also currently working on an Android app that will connect with it.
My website is http://reddevilriver.com Both OBD1 ALDL to USB and OBD1 ALDL to Bluetooth versions are sold there.
Hit me up at my email at gofast@reddevilriver.com if you wish to discuss this off of the forum.

Re: Android app for ALDL?
Sweet, thanks for the replies. Late last night I did quite a bit of digging and found some info on the 8192 baud and 160 baud comms. I found how to make the 2 transistor circuit for the aldl to serial. I also found the binary level info for an 86 camaro, which is awesome, except I don't know if its the same as the 87 that I have. I'll look at the links you guys provided tomorrow or on the weekend. Had a busy day at work today, so my brain cells are tired..
Pelle- my brother has tunerpro, so I've only briefly seen it. He lives 3 hours away so my access to that is limited. Haven't tried winaldl yet. I'll probably check that out later this week or on the weekend.
To tell ya the truth, I don't care about other cars. It'll have one purpose- as a dash for my 2000/1987 jeep cormarokee. I'll post up a link to the project when I get my website back up.. If I get something working, I'll probably just hand it to the public as open source and let people tinker away.
phonedawgz- I'll send you an email within the next few days..

Not true, due to recent changes: Torque BHP has the GM enhanced PID's. It comes with a fairly extensive set and allows easy addition of others. Of course there is practically no real documentation; you have to tread a lot in the forum.
