need help with AutoProm/tunerpro and VSS

so i just swapped a 350 into my 91 RS, and i used my auto prom to burn a AUJP.bin chip, using the 8D.xdf, and i got the car running and everything, but the speedo doesnt work, is there anything i can change on tunerpro to enable the VSS?

and how do i datalog/connect aldl with the autoprom

and what are the two switches on the right side of the autoprom?

i looked all over for simple answers to these questions and i cant find any anywhere

thanks in advance!

yes, magnetic/optical VSS switch in the "flags" section of the XDF.

I take it this is the speedo that is in front of the driver (as you ask about how to connect to the ALDL).

What engine/ECM was originally in your RS (TBI or MPFI)? And what harness did you use? This makes a difference in how the speedometer was originally wired.

3.1L v6 was original motor and now i have a harness from a 91 Firebird that had speed density so i have the 7730 ecm

In this case very little changes. The VSS sensor to ECM is on B9 & B10 of the ECM (yel & ppl).

Then B11 is the output to the speedometer (gry). It uses pin D on the I/P harness connector.

This is the same for both vehicles. Note that they both use the '7730 ECM, so you have a spare.

Re: need help with AutoProm/tunerpro and VSS

yeah i know they're the same im just trying to figure out why my speedo doesnt work, i tried checking and unchecking all of switch18 in tuner pro and that didnt do anything, what should the VSS instrument panel divisor be at? mine is at zero

and when i go to datalog it says "could not initialize port" what does that mean and how do i get it to work?

Re: need help with AutoProm/tunerpro and VSS

RS,
Go to youtube and search for autoprom, there are several short videos posted by Moates on the use of the Autoprom. Some other issues I have had which you may be having as well:
1) download and install the USB driver from the Moates website. I have V4 of tunerpro and had to do this. It was pretty easy, but it's an exe program that will set off some alarms with your antivirus. But if you have downloaded tunerpro recently, you may not have this issue since Craig is constantly updating his product.
2) check that tunerpro is looking for the autoprom in the correct USB port, something like "COM 3" for example. To find out which port or COM your computer is using open the windows prompt (if you are using Win7), right click on Computer, then left click on Manage. It will open a window named Computer Management, then select device management. You will see 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'. Under this selection you find 'COM3', etc. being listed. Then go into ALDL setup (in tunerpro) to change it to match what the computer is using.
2) on the autoprom those two little switches are not labelled, hense I needed a little trial and error on where to put them because I reutinely forgot the setup. And everytime I move a switch I have to cycle the ignition key and sometimes restart tunerpro.

About the speedo, I believe the 91RS is the same as the Z-28 I have, an electric speedo. But some Pontiac TA's and Firebirds used mechanical speedo's much later than the Chevy's.

Here is what I found when I was testing over the Christmas break when messing with the constants/scalars.
1) the 'vehicle speed sensor instrument panel pulse divisor' is what the ECM uses to compute the VSS pulses into the correct speed of the vehicle for the speedo, not the ECM itself. I found this by changing the divisor to something high, like 200, and the data the ECM was sending over the ALDL was signicantly slower than what the speedo was showing. So the electric speedo in my car is calibrated to 4006.96 pulses per mile. The same number used by the vehicle speed sensor scalar to tell the ECM how fast the car is going. Hense the divisor was '0'.
2) the vehicle speed sensor scalar is the pulses per mile the VSS sends to the ECM. Change this # if the gears are different in the differential.

If you have changed tires/gears or swapped in a transmission with a different VSS pulse count you will have to change the 'vehicle speed sensor' scalar. Mine is 4006.96 pulses per mile with 25.65in dia/80.581in circumference tires (245/50R16), which with the 3.42:1 gears (stock), equals approx. 229.82 revs per mile of the drive shaft. Take a mile (63,360 in) and divide it by your tire circumference (80.581in) for the result (786.29 revs). (786.29) divided by the gear ratio (3.42) results in (229.82) driveshaft revs per mile. If you know the pulses per rev of the driveshaft then you can calculate the pulses per mile for your individual setup.

Another way to confirm the pulses per mile for the VSS you have in the transmission is to remove the VSS from the tail housing and count the teeth on the reluctor wheel. 17 teeth means 17 pulses per revolution of the driveshaft.

Good Luck

I am going to try this spring to swap my T5 for a T56, which has a much higher pulse per mile VSS. I have no idea if the 730 ECM can see pulses as high as 45698.04 pulses per mile. Anyone tuning a car with a T56, can you tell me the vehicle speed sensor # your code has?

Thanks

Re: need help with AutoProm/tunerpro and VSS

Here is some info on the I/P divisor settings.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...libration.html
These are not your problem (right now anyway)

You need to get the datalog working so you can see if the ECM is actually reading the VSS input.
The bits setting for magnetic/optical will change the pins that are used for the reading depending on which one you have. Probably have the magnetic sensor with 4 pulses per revolution. STD 4000 pulses per mile.

If the ECM is getting the speed reading into the ECM the log will show it and your problem will then be at the output of the ECM to the dash.
Need to determine which problem you actually have to solve it.

AutoProm switches are:
vertical = ALDL mode (open, 10K resistance, shorted)
Horizontal = AutoProm mode (twards the connector), bypass "cable" mode.
Try the bypass mode first to see if you can get a connection.
Check ports etc as described above.

I had a 40 tooth relucter (for a 4l60) in my 700r4 that the builder accidently put in. When I was going 20 mph my speedo was pegged at 145 mph, so the 730 can see the pulses. I fixed it by taking the tail housing off and grinding off 38 teeth leaving 4 evenly spaced teeth. Worked perfect after plaing with the divisor to the speedo a little.
