New to chip burning. how is this setup for it?

I am looking into the stuff needed to get into chip burning. I have found the following items in the effort to save money. What do you think??

Ebay seller joshuavillasenor is selling a chip burner. It seems to support chip burning for our type of eproms. Going for $50. It's not pretty

Thirdgen seller Ryan H has an adapter for the ECM. It comes assembled with a ZIF adapter for $30, and chips are $3 each.

I have an AKM ALDL cable and laptop already.

I plan on using tuner Pro RT if I can ever get it to link up. In the mean time I will use WinALDl for the Data log.

I am not sure if the Burner comes with software and drivers or if Tuner Pro RT will run it?

Is there anything else I will need or something cheaper or better than what I listed for around the same price.
I am going to start slow and just mess with flags then maybe creep into fueling. I am afraid of adjusting spark tables.

Thanx for thr help!!

Spend the $$$ for a burner or equivelant from Intronics, the Pocket Programmer, or Craig Moates.

I cant comment on anyones adapters other than Craigs, which I have had good luck with.

Sometimes with equipment like this it pays to spend a little more to guarantee quality rather than have hardware and software issues.

Stick with what it known here to work.

What's wrong with the link? TunerPro and TunerPro RT - Professional Automobile Tuning Software

TunerPro only directly supports the Moates BURN1 (Flash & Burn) burner. You can buy it (and the adapter + chips) at Welcome to www.moates.net! : Moates.Net.

The Pocket Programmer II is a good unit as well, but no direct TunerPro support.

Mark - I think the "if I can ever get it to link up" comment was in relation to getting TP talking to his ECM thru the ALDL....

Ryan's adapters look to be basically the same but have a hole in the middle for strapping them down.
Either way it will work the same by bypassing the stock chip and leaving the rest of the circuitry active.
Be sure to get the ZIF option on either of them so changes can go quick.
Craig's "G3" switcher (with the 4 mb chip) is nice for having a variable that you want to change while driving and have each of your bins incremented up/down to see the reaction. Emulating while driving is difficult without a copilot so I do that type of adjusting for peace of mind. Can always go back to the original setting at the flick of the wrist rather than typing during the drive. Then just tap the throttle before/after each change so you know what bin you were running.

DOH!

Make sure there's a 10k resistor between A & B. Your '89 requires it in order to spit out ALDL data.

NEVER buy this kind of stuff from Ebay. As said above, pay the bucks for the right equipment. You never know what you are getting from Ebay. Stuff on Ebay is mis-represented every day.

We have a "get started" Eprom burning article, read it and buy the equipment in the article.

Take a look at the Willem. If you opened a Xtronics or a Moates box, you will see the designs are pretty much the same. All of these items are hobbyist equipment. A commercial PROM programmer will cost thousands of dollars. I built a parallel port EPROM programmer to burn ONLY AT29C256 chips a long time ago and the total cost was about $5. It still works fine.

I have the AKM cable for my car. The cable connects to the Laptop fine using WinALDL. Just can't get Tuner Pro RT to see the link?? Any ideas? It has an optional power supply to the cable. I wonder if TP rt need the cable powered?

So the general census is to go with the name brand programmers for ease of use and support. I can definately see the benefit to having good customer support. Pricier though. I will probably go with the BURN1 and ryan's chips and adapter with a ZIF. Anybody got an extra $150 laying around.
