New to PROM burning....couple of questions
Well, I was convinced by the guys on the TPI board that I need to start burning my own programs. I already read Traxion's article. He seemed to suggest a few different types of everything that you need. But, I was wondering if I could have a list of EVERYTHING I need and where I can get it. I'm basically looking for the recommended equipment from you guys, since Traxion lists a few different options. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You didn't state which ecm you are using. I'm going to guess a MAF 165 system. The scanner software that would be great for you is Craig Moates since it's free and from responses of users, very good. You'll have to build a cable which should be almost free or you could buy one. Seeing what the car is doing before buying the equipment will probably be a good idea, so I would do that first. The programmer most folks use is the Pocket Programmer (PP). If you use WinBin (free) or Tunercat, and use the latest version of the PP, you don't ever have to leave windoze. The only thing left is the type of prom, UV or EE. Right now things are leaning towards the EE side. The UV requires extra equipment but I *believe* the proms are cheaper. I don't know what type of prom or ecm your buddy's truck uses so I can't comennt on that.

Oh, sorry, I have the 90-92 ECM for 5.7 Speed Density. Don't know the number. I'm an EPROM idiot.

Your car uses the 7730 SD ecm. The Definition file you need to modify the BIN (the programming stored on the eprom), is the $8D.
You basically need three (maybe four) things to burn eproms:
1) A burner. Pocket Programmer is the most popular as you don't need a special interface card, it just hooks off the parallel port on your computer.
2) A BIN Editor. There are three, WINBIN (Free), GMEPRO and TunerCat. I like the ease of use of TunerCat and it is Windows based. www.tunercat.com TunerCat is available for a 30 day free trial period. Also, if you talk nice to them in an e-mail, they may flip you the a verions of the $8D.TDF to evaluate the software. I think it is nicer to see the actual things you can change on YOUR ECM than some other ECM.
3) A Scan Tool. There is variety of ones to use. Craig Moates is free, you just have to build a cable for it or you can purchase one like Diacom or Ease. I recommend trying Craig's first. I use Diacom PLUS but it is expensive. I actually think Craig's captures more information and I am considering trying in spite of owning Diacom Plus.
4) If you convert your existing memcal to use an AT29C256 Flash Prom (about $5.00), you do not even need a UV Eraser. If you do not convert, then you must get a UV Eraser to erase the eprom. Read Tim's article about the various methods you can do this (resolder in the Flash Prom, resolder a ZIF Socket, find a used "piggy back" Jet, Hyperjunk or ADS chip and just pull the eprom(they are just inserted) and insert the Flash Prom. I did the latter method.
This is the "short version" of what's in Tim's article. I suggest reading it again as I found a couple of "re-reads" helped a lot.
I cannot answer the Ram Truck question. If they use an eprom, then you probably can use the burner. You will have to find an Editor that will work on the Dodge Ram (I am sure they exist...might even talk to TunerCat on that one...if you had a "hac" you could even make a definition TDF with TunerCat's TDF Editor. I believe Diacom has a version that also works with Chryslers. Contact Rinda at www.rinda.com
Do some "searches" on the DIY PROM Board on keywords like "Winbin", "Tunercat", "Craig", etc as many things have been discussed on each, including other subjects already on this board. Probably more information than you care to know.
I do encourage reading some of the older posts. Some of the points may not make sense as you are learning something knew and sometimes we use abbreviations or terms that you may never have seen. Just ask what they are if you cannot figure out what the term or abbreviation means.

This isn't something you might need, but just advice. Don't get frustrated or discouraged because you have some kind of problem look at your scanner data, review other bin's that worked before and see what's different.
