Programming Primer

Forgive the basic nature of this question but I've read a lot of stuff on this board and in the tech section and on the gmecm site and there seems to be some confusion, on my part anyway, on terminology. I'd like to get involved with chip burning but I sure don't want to start out w/a misunderstanding of the basics.

There are ecu, tdf, bin, etc files out there - are these merely file extensions used by different editors for the same code? If so, can someone provide a fairly complete listing? If not, I need an explanation of the different file types.

Is the "calibration file" different from these files?

What is "ARAP?"

I'm sure one might be able to dig this out of all the info available but it would be nice to see a concise explanation in just one place.

Reading PROMs will produce an image of your PROM stored in a file with a .BIN extension (binary). It is this binary file that must be modified in order to change things such as fuel and spark parameters.

This binary file needs to be interpreted appropriately in order to read/change the specifics. In order to read the bin appropriately the Editor that you are using must have the appropriate calibration file (aka definition file) loaded.

WinBin's definition file is a .ecu file
TunerCat's definition file is a .tdf file
GMEPro's definition file is a .epe file

ARAP is a MemCal ID. There are many different MemCal IDs specific to the make/model of your car. See Ludis' site at http://www.cruzers.com/~ludis/ for MemCal IDs.

More specifically, ARAP is the PROM image used by GM when handing over a MAF car for testing purposes by Magazines.

Can you expand on that a bit? Does that make it good or bad? (I would guess good, since everybody uses it)
