Free Scan Tool Software & Cheap Interfaces
If anyone is interested in scan tools for a reasonable price, there are several designs out there. Andrew Mattei has a nice MAX232 product line for interfacing with the ALDL of our cars, and it keeps the do-it-yourself spirit on things. TRAXION put the link in his first guide post - just wanted to serve up a reminder.
I know there are several free scantool software packs out there, too. I've written one which anyone is more than welcome to try, modify, improve, inspect, etc:

I'm trying to get it running with the MAP systems now, just been the MAF so far. It has some good logging capabilities and a pretty nice feature selection for a QBasic DOS-basd application. I'm trying to grow the program some, but have reached a stale point in terms of motivation (kinda does everything I need for me). If anyone wants to try it out, feel invited. I'd appreciate any feedback. I'll never charge for it, just a hackish piece of work which will evolve over time. Works with MAX232/233-type, and maybe some others.
Later,
Craig

Craig,
If I ever get motivated to either make a MAX interface or buy one then I'd be interested in checking it out and helping to improve it. I'm a VB programmer by trade![](https://www.thirdgen.org/messageforum3/biggrin.gif)
However - the problem becomes getting the money to buy a MAX or getting motivated to build one![](https://www.thirdgen.org/messageforum3/frown.gif)
