TunerPro for Dummys
Ive searched. Is there any info that anyone knows of that kinda explains what some of the setting are in your prom. I know some of the basic but want to learn what some of the others are so can see whats relative to what. For example:
MAT Compensation Counts vs. MAT
Low Octane Knock retard Multiplier vs. RPM (and all other Multi.)
Crank Pulse Width vs. Temp
Highway Mode Fuel Delay Timer
and etc. I dont want to know to change them and jack my car all to hell. It would just be nice to know incase i ever want/need to refer to it for a problem or such. I know that no one here wants to go over all the settings in an 8D.xdf. I was just wondering if someone can refer some sites or pages that might contain some of the info im looking for. I read alot of post here on the DIY-Prom board even when i dont know what you all are talking about. I read them though so i can maybe learn or catch on what, what is. It would just be nice to have something to refer to when im reading about something i dont know.
Thanks,
Brian

being new at this, all the information is incredibly confusing.
this may sound dum, but is there a program that you could play with where you load your engine bin and edit everything in real time as if you were in your car. just to get a feel for the program without actually hurting your car?
also, when people say 'definitions' does that mean settings? becuase ive seen alot of definitions around. I was just wondering if i could load someone elses definitions that had the same stock engine and see what settings they had and perhaps try it on my car?

there is a big learning curve to chip burning.
the best thing to do is read the stickies up at the top, also do some reading over here,
http://www.moates.net/phpforum/
and some more reading over here,
http://tunerpro.markmansur.com/
you can also get TunerPro at the second link, its a great program
that with the right hardware lets you scan, edit, & burn chips.
both places have the Def, ADS, ECU / XDF files for TunerPro.
after you have done a few hours (if you read very fast) but probably more like a few days worth of reading, play with TunerPro some, then go back & re-read everything again.
then use the serach feature here for questions, atleast thats how i did it
i have read most of the stickies here 3 times so far,... some 4 or 5 times,... or more.

There's a test bench, that will let you mod stuff and simulate the car. But that's an advanced topic in itself.

Every link in DIY-PROM on TGO and every corresponding link contained herein is highlighted red whenever i reopen pages. Ive been reading and playing with TP for about 2 years now without ever having any type of hardware to read, write, or edit. So when last week i got a PP2 and some proms (thanks you Craig) i have succesfully burnt several chips with no problem. But im still completley green when it comes to the actual "tuneing" b/c i dont understand alot of the tables and constants. What i do understand is enough to start my learning process. NO matter how much you read and read and read, you will still NEVER have a complete grasp on whats going on until you have some hands on experience. I made 2 tran interface about a year ago and have been datalogging ever since but i still dont understand some of the values and therefore i still dont understand alot of the tables and constants. Although this site was the best i have found on the table and const. definitions. http://www.edgesz28.com/edgesz28/sup.../Super8ecu.htm

There is a program on the chip (the BIN file)
This is the operating software code that has all the functions in it.
To properly interpet the BIN file for editing you must know where each variable is located (or you'll change something you didn't want to)
The "definition" file (several types of formats for different editors) are the road maps to the variables. They allow you to make changes to a location within the BIN that corresponds to the "text" definition of what that item does.
Tuner Pro uses "ECU or XDF" files for BIN definitions.
TunerCat uses "TDF" format files.
The definitions change on different systems and years so without a correct definition for your setup you're not sure what is what.
The definition file also does the calculations so the item is displayed and adjusted in real world units so editing can be done easily.
There is another definition file for the outcoming datastream.
Totally separate issue, not the same as above.
This definition ("ADS file in TunerPro) matches up the item from the datastream with a text description of what it is and also does the calculations to make it show in real world units.
So temperaturecan be read in F or deg C rather than ECM "counts".

Thats also means ALOT and i mean ALOT of work, time and dedication to turn 0x83D6 into ; fan on temp: 107.75°C, below mph threshold (@ 0x83DB) for people like me that dont even know my abc's or 123's. I am VERY gratefull for all you people that program, code, hack and translate. If it wasnt for you all, we (newbs) would still be paying hunderds of $$$ for "custom" prom that still doesnt do us anygood. Thanks alot

A mask is a template used to define where a certain value is located in a bin. Masks are $58, $8D, $42 etc.
To read mask $xx you need a definition file. ECU, XDF, or TDF etc to allow TP or TC etc to read and edit mask $xx correctly.
Mask and definition are frequently used inter changably.
But this is not true in every case. The old timers have a better idea when this is as not all bins of a certain mask may use the same definition to be correct. I've yet to see this, but have read that the situation exists. So if your using a common bin. Then the definition will usually be correct. Doesn't mean that the definition is set up correctly though even if it is common. The code may be doing things that the author of the definition didn't know or the tuning program is unable to display correctly.
