NEWBIE, questions
INFO:
I Have a 1987z28
I bought: (MOATES)
adlu1 usb to adl converter
cable1 odb1-style aldl connector
burn1 flash n burn usb based chip programmer
gp1 package, gm adapter with 2 chips
DOWNLOADED TUNER PR R/T
1.
will I be able to read the stock chip in my car???
2.
I installed the gp1 package in my ecm but the new chip is empty, will it read and run off the old stock chip that is also in there?
Iam having difficulty trying to find documentation on how to, on all the stuff I bought.
Iam making progress but slow, (that might be good).
It would be nice if there were manuals for some of the information.
3.
I down loaded a bin file but can't get it to create a file called . XDF
I looked at the help file in the software, and followed it, but still can't get it to go.
what is this?
how do I get it.
4. can you help me? or point me in the correct direction?
5. are there any other web sites I can down load bins for my car?
Thanks much

I did, will again, and again.
But I believe the DXF file is for the Tunerpro r/t software only.
also didn't see anything on the question I had about
gp1 package, gm adapter with 2 chips
will I be able to run the current stock chip that's on there if there isn't a flash chip present.
Of course there is a see of information, and rooting out what I need is difficult
thanks

Have you found (searched) the answers to your questions yet?
I guess I can throw out a few.
Question 1: will I be able to read the stock chip in my car???
Answer 1: The answer can be found in Craigs description for his Flash-N-Burn. This description can be found on moates.net, where you bought the adapter.. But since I'm already there.... his description is:
Product Description: USB Chip Programmer works with the AT29C256, 27SF512, and AM29F040 chips. Self-powered from the USB port, so no power adapter is needed! Burner can also be used to read stock GM memcals using the HDR1 adapter. While it will only program the three types of chips listed, please note that those three chips can be used as drop-in replacements for most EFI applications. Comes with stand-alone chip programming software (available for download). Also compatible with TunerPro RT. Will read most stock-style chips (2732A, 27C128/256/512/etc).
Question 2: I installed the gp1 package in my ecm but the new chip is empty, will it read and run off the old stock chip that is also in there?
Answer 2: NO. Take a look at your stock memcal (with the blue top removed). notice how there are two portions - a normal standard simple black chip at the "top" (a PROM), and a chip-like (sort of) device at the "bottom". The device at the bottom is some simple analog electronics that let the car run in "limp home" mode ( don't know what that is? read/search for it) in case something goes bad with the chip.
Anyhow, the purpose of programming is to run your own settings and calibrations in place of the original ones on the PROM. We really don't touch the other stuff (the bottom half of the chip). So...what I'm driving at is this: the purpose of the moates adapters is to connect the ECM directly to the "bottom" half of the memcal (so that the ECM can use the unmodified bottom half of the memcal), but at the same time provide an empty socket to plug your own chip in, which entirely replaces (electronically speaking) the chip half of the memcal. The adapter has NO electrical connection whatsoever to the stock PROM inside the memcal. Go grab your adapter and stare at it so that this makes sense to you.
3) can't help you, don't use that software
5) get familiar with www.diy-efi.org/ especially the GM ECM section, they have large library of stock BIN's available, also I believe moates.net may be carrying these now as well? You will want to start with a STOCK bin so that you know exactly what you've changed - not someone elses "tuned" chip where you have no idea what was done or how safe it is to run on your combo.
add'l stuff:
1227165 is the full part number for your ECM (computer). They are often referred to by the last three numbers - in your case, a '165. The newer camaros (newer meaning 90-92) use a 1227730 (often referred to as the '730).
The best easiest surefire way to know what is on your stock chip is to remove it from your ECM and visually identify it. GM put stickers on the chips/memcals to identify what is on it. We often refer to them by the first four letter designation on the chip - ARAP, akxz, etc. etc.
I am pretty sure there is info floating around that lists all the common chips GM put in these cars, a little searching might find something. I don't have much memorized for the MAF cars (being MAP myself with a '730 and AXXD).
I guess I can throw out a few.

just take your time, i kept searching and searhcing, and it took me over 5 days over a few weeks just to get datalogging.
between this site, moates.net, and http://tunerpro.markmansur.com/
you will get.
I am working with the 730 (speed density)
Like right now I got some files and have played them back over and over, just dont know what to look for when watching the graphs and stuff move around.
You have everything i bought also! another then u have a different computer with maf. which to get datalogging requires different files then what i have to help you.
Good luck you will get it over time, its going to take awhile its not anything you can learn in one day, at least for me it wasnt.
i went to their site it seems you want to work with these files.

I believe everything you are looking for comes with TunerPro or is available on his website.
If I'm not mistaken, The author has a 165 setup and it is the only "confirmed" stuff he has provided with the software.
Go to the website and check his download page.
I'm not sure if he runs 32,32B, or 6E so you'll need to be sure and get the right files for your car.
You do not need to "create" the XDF file, only must "load" one.
The "ECU" file can also be imported to an XDF.
The XDF is the new format that used to be ECU.
The ECU or XDF file is the roadmap (so to speak) of the locations in the calibration file (Bin) that you will be changing.
Without this file you will not know what you are adjusting.
As far as reading your existing chip or using the one in the Memcal, don't bother. The bin file is somewhere posted that you could get it, make a quick burn on your chip and then run it in your Moates adapter. See the stickies for most of the places to look for files.
