Feeding VSS signal directly into ECM?

Will the hardware in the ECMs/PCMs accept the signal from the VSS directly with no buffer box? I have a TKO with a fnord pickup and I want to feed it into my tbi PCM so I can have non-bouncy mph in my datalogs, or maybe also drive a speedo as well.

I take it ill need a buffer box of some sort? It already has teh right number of PPM. Something like ~2200 if my calcs are correct.

To clarify, my question is will the current VSS input accept the VSS sensor output directly without a buffer and have no ill effects?

I don't think so, but a buffer for a reluctor signal is a simple circuit. HTH

I am interested in what you find out.

I had found this site with some VSS info . Im looking to make my own using ABS or other VSS sensor, this site help me some..

To me it sounds like i could use any 'digital' vss sender and simply adjust code to make it correct???

Nearly all aftermarket accessories that utilize vehicle speed data are programmable for a wide variety of signal sources and pulse rates. This is to accommodate the 4 and 8 pulse VSS signals from earlier EFI engines, as well as the much more frequent signals generated by later vehicles with ABS.
However, most electronic speedometers and cruise control units are optimized for a specific rate for better performance. BRAND RECOMMENDED VSS

Check out the National Semiconductor LM1815. Digikey has them. It takes in an AC magnetic reluctor signal and spits out a square wave.

i think i might have used that one before.... if it is the same one i used, it worked GREAT. took out some phantom signals my PIC was getting....

It probably is. Has been around for a long time. $3.50 at Digikey, few pins to hook up and it removes the phantom signals that you mentioned.

I think the easiest thing to do is use a yellow or white VSS buffer box off one of the MAF equipped magnetic VSS buffer boxes from a TPI setup.
This will convert the AC VSS signal to digital with the 747 ECM requires. I guessed at the 747 ECM because sig. says TBI.

computer will be an 8625. I would assume the hardware is set up in a similar manner?

I am not familiar with the TBI setups. I am assuming the car has an optical VSS at the speedo head, true??
If the computer originally came from a vehicle that had an optical VSS and you want to install a magnetic VSS, then install the yellow/white buffer box and you should be all set.

Worst comes to worst, there's also an $80 converter box from Dakotadigital.com

I've got one on order to recalibrate for my 3.54 gears. My ECU is the generation BEFORE you could recalibrate in the ECU.
