'89 Tpi Ragtop Datamaster File

Hey Gang...

I'm new to this area.. Just bought a nice '89 TPI 5-speed Ragtop IROC. I am very interested in this section of the board and have started reading through what you guys are up to.. I logged a 5 minute drive with data master and was wondering if one of you would be kind enough to take a look at it and tell me how far outa whack this car is running...??

The car seems to run a little rich... It throws no error codes and might have an after market chip in it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

SeanDownload Datamaster file here!

Any chance of posting it in a plain test format, or something that those of us without datamaster can read?

I have no idea. I've never used Datamaster - but most all the aldl data loggers have some way to post plain text, or even an excel spreadsheet.

anyone else used datamaster and can comment?

you can output the datamaster file to excel. The option is in the file menu. Just choose the data fields you can us to look at.

Thanks!

Will do.. I think I was playing with that function last night but wasn't quite sure what I was dealing with. I selected a few items on the list and it seemed to output only the reading that was taken at that very point in the timeline. If this is the case, maybe I will try to select the readings at idle and then also one from WOT..

Will upload tonight when I get home.

Thanks for the help!

you need to also tell it to output a range of data. The box near the top of the window has the option of outputting 1 to ???? records...

Do you know if you're running speed density, or are you using a MAF? I looked at the DM file, but I only have the speed density setup in DM, so that's probably why I was seeing some pretty strange things in your log file.....

I looked at the datamaster file other than the rich condition the only thing I noticed was that its adding knock retard in the mid to high teens when you go to wot. In other words its removing spark advanced when you give it the gas pedal.
Watch the knock counts and knock retard when you play it back.

Is the knock retard caused by the rich condition?

I don't claim to be an expert but if it is rich then no. The timing maybe set too high.
Check to see where the base timing is set.

Do you guys know what the base timing should be for my car? Just dug out my timing light and will check it tonight after work.

Thanks,

Sean

hmmmm,

Just looked for the brown EST wire on the firewall and it is not there... I want to reset the timing.... Is it in a different location for 1989?? My '87 has it in the usual place.

Should be right in front of the heater blower motor. It is a tan wire with a white stripe. Should be sitting outside a larger loom.

Change in direction!

It got too dark to mess with the timing so I pulled the ECM from under the dash and looked at the EPROM....

I think this is the culprit.. Here are the numbers on the PROM in my car now:

16133420
APYS 3509

I thought ANXY was the correct broadcast code for my car's PROM ('89 TPI Manual)????

The code on the outside of the ECM is 1227165 which I believe to be the correct ECM for the car.

It appears this car has the wrong chip in it. If I am on the right track please let me know.

I'm not sure what ANXY is for... Using this site I was able to put in APYS for the broadcast code, and it shows that chip is for an '89 5.0 with a manual. Not saying that the site is right, but I dunno why else it would be there... Unfortunately, I'm just now learning to use my Autoprom (just trying to get used to using it connected to my computer and software) so I can't make any suggestions for your condition. Good luck though =)

Chip is correct..its been correct for the last 15 yrs. Check the timing...and do a tune up. Drive it and enjoy it.

Thanks you guys..

Luke4907 - thanks for the link to that site.

Slow89 -I will reset the timing in the morning.

Thanks for the assistance. I hope to be burning my own PROMs in the near future.

Sean

Ok,

I the timing was off. I did reset it and the car ran better but still a little off. I changed out the chip just for fun since I have a brand new one for the car and now it doesn't seem to be running rich anymore. I will do some more datalogging and see how different things look now.

Regards,

Sean
