I pulled my eprom out of my car for the first time. I put it in my programmer and saved the bin. I was just practicing with TunerProRT. I had to destroy the plastic thing around the chip. I put the chip back in my PCM but now the car runs like crap, super rich from what I can smell. I cannot connect to the PCM via winaldl (been working perfect) and I also cannot do the factory self diagnostic check.

Do you get a flashing check engine light? I bet you do. Your running in limp home mode, because the ecm can't see the chip. You either put it in backwards or the pins aren't touching. I always had to bend the pins in a good bit to get them to work right without the plastic carrier, even then you had to "wiggle" the chip some times to get it to work properly.
If you feel comfortable soldering then I would put in a real chip socket, then you can get a ZIF and never have to worry about bending the legs on your chips again.

done that. reverse it and straighten pins. i dont think you hurt anything. my soldered in socket with push fit ZIF did not work out. the ZIF pins appeared in good shape upon removal yet i was plagued with faulty prom(lack of contact issues) would work for a few days and then go goofy especially if i hit a bump. socket/prom never an issue. i thought i was burning wrong at first. i gave up on ZIF and use original socket. eventually will go prominator.

I thought it was contact issues, so I put the chip back in its holder to put pressure on it. I put it in intially with the notch in the chip towards the wall (chip is offset to one side, thats the "wall"). It was doing the limp mode, so I flipped the chip around and the SES light did the strobe. I put it back and was playin around with it.
I then took the chip out and put it back into the programmer to read it, a bunch of friggen 00s came up where there use to be numbers.
Did I corrupt the chip or something?
I am worried about it, but not really...YET...
I have a G2 adapter and 28pin ZIF in the mail so I HOPE that will make everything work again.

**** and ***** in the ***
I definatly learned my lesson. The notch goes towards the inside, not the outside

Socket for the flash chip is the way to go.
I did it on my 148.
Took me the better part of a day and two sets of the socket strips to get it right however.
Used the adapter from Moates. Due to having to cleanly solder a double sided PCB.
Was a real pia, but worth it in the end. Slap in a flash chip and go and swap out just as fast and let me use my romulator too.

That's not going to hold up very well. I know, I did it about 4 years ago in a pinch and it was cutting in and out after 5 minutes. I've got about 20 of those plastic holders if you want some just give me an address.

Well I installed the Moates G2 adapter and heavy duty ZIF, and everything works awsome, the first time!
Goodbye 2732 and hello AT29C256!
I almost forgot:
Moates is the man, super fast shipping! I can make it to the drag strip tomorrow thanks to this man!
