PROMinator

Help!
I am about to purchase the PROMinator for my '85 iroc and have a couple questions. Is it worth the extra dough for the pro version so as to program on the fly without performance interuption?and second I have a ECM out of a '86 and I'm wondering Should I swap it out? What are the benifits I mean with the prominator hooked up and all.If I do decide to use the one from the '86 how easy are the to swap out.Do yje have the same connecters or do I have to cut and splice? Help!

Sorry I won't be able to answer any of your questions about your computer as I don't know the exact differences in the '85 and the '86 up. I have the prominator std. and don't see much of a need for the pro version. Just buy one of the dip switches and you can upload multiple .bins and use the dip switch to select among them. You don't need to shut the car off to switch among them, either. I don't see why more people aren't using this thing. It is a piece of cake compared to burning your chips.

The Prominator is awesome, I love it!!!!! I have the Pro version and the only benefit I can see over the standard would be if you were tuning on a Dyno. It could save you a lot of money in dyno time. Then again, if you had somebody driving the car you could make changes while driving, say like up a grade.....

I have an 85 Camaro (870 computer) that I have converted to 86-89 (165 computer) and I highly recommend it, especially if you have a modified engine. The computer is much quicker and thus far 6E is pretty easy to work with. Of course I haven't messed with everything in it yet.

The connectors between the 870 and the 165 are the same, however, the wires are not in the same order and so changes will have to be made. You can find all you need for the conversion in the stickies section at the top of this board. I would recommend running the 89 6E code instead of the 86-88 32B code.

I have no phone number for you- Bill provided quick, clear replies to my questions (which were limited due to good design) via e-mail. It is a good product with many benefits.

The SpeedTronics site has discussion boards for posting questions, but I had best luck with e-mails.

I am in the middle of tuning my 383 right now with the Prominator. This is the first true test for me, even though I've had the product for about a year.
I got was able to do more meaningful tuning in the first 4 hours of use than I did in the first 4 weeks using the old method of removing chips, burning etc...
It really takes alot of the needless work out of tuning.

ZEEYA, I got My PROMinator a couple months ago (Still have not itstalled it) but as far as questions go there is much information on their forum http://prominator.homeip.net/ Keep in mind that Ken and Bill (the two guys that run the company) have full time jobs on top of building PROMinators and answering questions. I just had to be patient when asking questions, they did answer very concisely it just a took a bit of time.
good luck!

Which ECM exactly do you have? Is it the '870? http://www.cruzers.com/~ludis/c3xref.html#1226870 If it is then go here http://prominator.homeip.net/topic.a...=&TOPIC_ID=105 and see that the EPROM type (2732) = 4k.
With that said, I would think you want to buy the prominator for the computer you are going to get and swap it out together. That would suck to buy a prominator for your C3 and have to buy another when you swap to the P4.

The Prominator is not something you can switch from computer to computer (870 Vs 165) If you are going to do the swap to a 165 computer, order the Prominator for that computer. Bill will know what size to hook you up with. Don't remember if I mentioned it above or not, but get the rotary dip switch as well. It's too cool!!!!!! Makes switching from bin to biin so easy!!!!!!

There isn't a tremendous amount of information on tuning the 6E code, but none exists at all for the code for the 870 computer (that I've found anyway). I have several files that I have saved from this board that I'm hoping to find time to piece together into a tuning guide of sorts.... With a full time job and a full time ministry, time is not something I have a lot of!!!!!!!

Again, search the stickies for all that you can find and then you will be able to ask informed questions. People on the board respect that and will be glad to help if you are putting some work of your own into it. Be sure to use the seach function as well...

Just as an aside, If you are running a stock motor. The 85 IROC chip is way better than the stock Z28 chip. At least way better than the one in my stock Z28 that I owned before this car.

The ADS Superchip was nice as well. It has a little different lockup for the converter than the stock stuff. (Their 85 Corvette 350 chip stinks though)
