I am at witts end!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the situation.

1990 Formula TPI 7730 at present. I am using a 2 transistor interface and moates ecm852 program, Windows 98se. I have absolutely no problems, luckily. I was able to tune the car no problems......

Now, here is the big problem that is about to drive me totally nuts, have been trying everthing I can think of for about 4 months on and off still no luck. Now that the spring is here I NEED to find a solution.

I want to convert to 7749. However, I can not get Tunerpro or
Datamaster datacollection software to connect to my car. I need to get one of these programs to connect because they support 7749, motes ecm852 does not. I do not want to do the conversion if I am not going to have a datalogger to give me feedback.

Here are the things that I have tried to trouble shoot.

I have directly connected the aldl cable from the computer to the ecm--- DATA to A8 12V Power to B1 and Ground to A12.

Reloaded win98se, disabled all ports except com1.
Com 1 settings in windows 9600 baud, Data bits 8,parity None, Stop bits 1, Flow control Xon/Xoff.

Tunerpro RT settings:
Interface type MAX232
Com1
have tried EVERY Hz setting currently set at 10Hz

Definition file 1227730.ads
Have set logfile name

Click on connect, No connection.

I cannot indicate how fustriated I am with not being able to get this thing to work.

I have borrowed a newer computer from a neighbor to try tunerpro and datamaster and no luck, same results.

If ECM852 would work with 7749, I would not be all that concerned because at least this way I would have a way of datalogging.

Is there in the Western NewYork area that has a working Tunerpro/ALDL setup?

HELP PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To be clear, when you say you're converting to 749, you mean that you'll be running 8D on the 749? If so, why would you want to do this? If not, and you'll be running 58 code, why not run the 58 code in your 730?

In either scenario, don't forget that you'll need to re-pin your harnesses. Thats the first thing.

If you're running 8D on the 749 and everything is pinned correctly, TunerPro should connect right up (just like ECM852 does).

If you're running 58 on the 749 and your particular bin is verbose with unsolicited ALDL output, you'll need to hit the connect button, let the error count rise, then manually send mode 8 commands until the error count stops rising. Make sure you have the latest 749_58.ads file. A good one lives here:

XDF

http://www.nwstp.com/files/paul/58_2&3bar.zip

ADS - (3 Bar ALDL file)

http://www.nwstp.com/files/paul/1227...91-93-3bar.zip

You cannot use the 730 ADS file to connect to 58.

I am going to be running $58 on the 7730 repinned. I need to run the $58 because I have gotten rid of my FMU and will be running boost with a 2 bar map.

Even before I make this step I still cannot connect with tunerpro using 8D and 7730. This is what I would like to accomplish before doing the conversion so that I am not making too many changes at one time.

Step 1 get tunerpro to connect to 7730 with 8d program.

Step 2 convert 7730 repinned to run $58

Well, there are lots using 8D with TunerPro. The only people I'm aware of who have trouble connecting with 8D are those who have digital dashes. I'm guessing your formula doesn't have this.

If Datamaster doesn't connect, give the 90 vette version a try. It sends silence commands before connecting. If that works, then you have a chatty BCC.

Tomorrow I will give the vette version a try. I am only using the demo version of datamaster, I have not yet committed to a dataloger until I can get one that works.

Thanks for the advice.

Only time I've ever had connection problems to aujp are after TP has locked up and closed itself. I attribute the lock up to low memory.
A reboot fixes it. This leads me to believe that something in the com port software gets garbled. Also, occasionally, 98SE will not let loose of the comport so it shows up as port not found or similar in the software trying to use it. Never seen this with TP though. Can't remember, but think I fixed this in the bios settings.
Been a long time since I've had the problem.
I use an Autoprom though so this isn't an apples to apples comparison. You might look at trying a different com port and see if it goes away. Your modem or something might not like sharing.
One of the reasons I went usb. Makes the resource sharing go away.....

I have no modem and took every psmca (sp?) card out, re loaded windows...... still problems. I have been seriously considering the autoprom with a usb laptop, however, my concern would be investing all of that money and have the same problems.

That is why I wish there was someone near by that had a working setup, to see if it was the car end or the computer end.

Just from what you mentioned to me sounds like a computer, cable, com port issue.

in some way I hope it is.....The thing that gets me is that ecm852 works like a charm, so should that rule out the cable??

I don't know if you've seen this. But, this thread might help....?

Although he was trying to connect to a 749, I would imagine the grounding issue he found could be equally applicable to other ECMs.

Yes, I have found grounding the laptop to the car to help before.

Not sure what cable you got, who made it, made at home, etc.

I can say I ahve had some good luck with tunerpro and the 749 ecm. In fact that is the only ecm I play with.

Connected to SEVERAL syty's without an issue, once you hit the silence ECM command initially.

YES! If ECM852 works, there is zero reason why TunerPro wouldn't work outside of settings within TunerPro itself. The original ALDL code in TunerPro was based losely on Craigs ancient-art QBasic code. It also means your cable is functional.

Make sure you're pointing TunerPro to the correct COM port, and make sure its set to MAX232 mode. Does the "test settings" button return success with your cable attached?

Ok finally getting somewhere, The Chatty BCC stuck in my head over night, did some subliminal thinking.

Checked in my notes when I had auto trany and first started doing bins. I did try datamaster back then and it id work used my free ones and then used craigs program.

So what I did is made up a bin from the old BCC before I switched and Walla...tunerpro connected no problem so did datamaster.

So this would lead me to believe that it is a chatty BCC that I am using now. How can I get it to connect with my present $8d BCC ,with mode 8 commands? How do I send Mode 8 commands?

Do I need tunerpro 4 for this?

Thanks, feel great to finally make some progress.

I haven't yet implimented the silence mode before connection routine into TunerPro, but it is planned. There are a number of cars that need it, including the SyTy guys, 94/95 LT1s, 90/91 vettes, and a number of others. So its in the plans, but not there yet.

For your 730, download Super_8dm.ecu from the web site and import it into TunerPro 4.0.

You guys have been a great help. Thanks very much.

I loaded my original BCC from several years ago and then transferred all of my data from my current bin into it and it connects to tunerpro no problem!

I now can do my swap to 749 wiring!!!!!!!!!

And Mark is going to have another regestered user!!

Thanks Mark!
