After searching the boards I found this diagram you posted back in "03". If I understand correctly this will work for a 91 Formula with a 7730 ECM. Correct? No 12volt power supply neccessary (depending on lapyop used?). I only asked because its different form the other 2 transitor cable diagram that is posted on this forum(the one with the "Lotus Esprit ALDL Connector" shown)
Thanks in advance!

Another question: RBob, the transitors and diode you listed on your diagram, are those the same as the ones listed in the diagram below (this is the one mentioned in my first post). Radio shack (my only local source) doesn't have those part #'s listed. I already bought the ones shown on this diagram (radio shack part numbers). Also, the resistors are totally different as far as values ( i.e. 27K or 100k) except for the one 10K one you have in your schematic. I don't want to be a pain the a$$ but I'd like to get it right the first time and electronics is not my strong suit. Thanks again!

In the first post the ALDL interface is a decent version. The two transistors I used are 2N3904's. The one diode is a zener 8.2 V 500 mW. If you'd like it to work better over a greater range of serial ports change the 10K to a 3.9 K (no questions on this unless you have read the data sheet on the 1489 data receiver).

For a zener the 1N5237 and 1N4738 will work. A or non-A version.

Also, be careful of the second (Lotus Esprit) interface. Most if not all of the US based ECM ALDL connectors do not have +12 volts on them. So this would would to be pulled from elsewhere.

And yes, I have used the first posted interface on several '730, '727, and '747 ECMs. With a variety of laptops (Acer, Compaq, and Toshiba).

RBob.

Thanks for ur help RBob!!! Two more questions though. Where do I tie in the 12 volts on the cable design that you use? The schematic doesn't show, and will 1N4148 diode substitute for the ones you have listed. I'am sure it won't but I can't find the 1N5237 and 1N4738 diodes locally. Thanks again!

UPDATE, Forget about my second question RBob, I finally got the specs for the 1N4148 and its way off. Also I just called a local electronics supply place which doesn't normally sell retail but he is checking his warehouse and will sell me just a few of each if he has them.

You don't. The 10K that I suggest to be changed to a 3.9K is the power feed.

RBob, I am using a IBM390 laptop with Windows98. When checking for the 12 volts from the Laptop I get a negative 5.9 volts between Pin 4(DTR) and Pin 5(GND) on the laptops serial 9 PIN (a reverse polarity problem?) I then connect the cable and the moates software tells me there is no connection. I've tried the 10k resistor and then removed it and then soldered in the 3.9 resistor(with moates software) between PINs 4(DTR) and 2(RxD) on the DB9 and still can't connect. I removed the connection from PIN 4 (DTR) and ran it to a unswitched 12 volt power source on the fuse box using first the 10K connected between PIN 2(RxD) and the unswitched 12 volt power line and then tried the 3.9 K and still no luck connecting(moates software)! Do you have any opinion?
Thanks in advance!!!
Also,
The serial port on the laptop is enabled and set to 9600 baud rate.

Update, I finally go this thing figured out!!! My car is a 91 Formula that was originally a 305 TBI. New motor and conversion to SD TPI. I keep trying to connect to the "M" pin on the ALDL connector for the data link to the ECM but low and behold on the TBI cars the data is on PIN "E"! Made the connection and bingo, both Moates and Tunerpro RT run. Thanks again for your responses RBob!

(may want to pop pin E out and move it to M's position. Then any scan tool can be used).

That is something that is rather confusing! I have an auto x-ray and when I scan, I configure it as a VIN type "8" and it scans just fine. Maybe the auto x-ray scans over all the possible pins looking for the data stream and then locks on when found, just a guess? Who knows, who cares, I'am in business with the laptop and the scanner works!!!!!!!!
