burned first prom!

Hey guys I am another newbie who has been doing some late night reading on this board to try and catch up, I just burned my first chip today and this is the results. After much reading I decided to try the saujp bin to see how it would work out. Car is a 92 T/A 5spd with LB9 engine. I used tuner cat to change everything I could find relating to the automatic to the values in my stock chip (TCC lock speeds, etc) and changed the injector and cylinder size constants to 19.8 and 623 respectively. I popped it into my G3 adapter plugged in my memcal and fired it up, It immediatel started to surge at idle and at light throttle settings in both open and closed loop it surges so bad that it eventually will stall. when I revert back to my stock chip everything goes back to normal. My next step is to break out the scanner and see what is happening, In the meantime does anyone have any ideas? I have read about others having successfully run this bin on 305's so what else might be going on?

You've started with the wrong BIN. S-ARAP is a 350 automatic transmission BIN, you need to start with a BIN for a 305 manual transmission.

If its a '92 its not a '165 $6E car, its a 730 $8D car, I think.

elohssa - what bin did you start out with?

Oops. I never learned to read. (Actually, I usually sub-conciously expect to see BCCs in all caps).

that said, Elohssa - is there a particular reason you haven't read (and started with) your stock bin (the bin included in your stock memcal)?

If you prefer not to remove it from the calpak in order to read it, Moates offers a memcal header for reading the stock bin directly from the memcal. I believe it's $10.

I always recommend starting from a known-good starting point, which usually turns out to be the stock bin.

Well the reason I didn't start with my stock program is as you said because I did not want to destroy the memcal getting the eprom out and I do not have the header adapter from moates but now that I know it exists i will be purchasing one. The s_aujp is a SD based bin is it not? so I should be able to make it work. I've been driving around some with the s_aujp bin and it actually seems to work quite well except for the aforementioned surging blm's seem to be hovering around 119-120 so I guess it will need some tweaking. When the surging occurs it goes from 119-96 and back again. Should I try turning up the idle speed? It is set at 600 in the bin.

s_AUJP is a 350 auto bin. Pretty long way from a 305 manual. ;-)

Do you know the broadcast code of your stock chip (typically found on the silver sticker seen through the memcal cover - 4 letters)? Theres a good chance you can find it for download.

Not to be a ~but~..... but...... tread very carefully with making 'wholesale' changes to A-N-Y parameter until you are V-E-R-Y sure of what you are doing.

Rule of thumb is 'Change one and ONLY one thing at a time.'
Start with a STOCK bin and work from there.

1) Define the results you want to achieve.

2) Determine what values will affect that results.

3) Change ONE value at a time and see if the output is moving in the desired direction.

4) Make notes on what you changed and the results that you measure.

This applies to pretty much anything you do/troubleshoot/work on.

This is somewhat of a science and to be successful you will have to adopt a 'scientific' mindset.
