Tunercat message: source file is corrupt, or in unrecognized format
Car: 87 TPI/5spd maf system 165 computer
Well to start off I'm very new to this. This is my first try today at any of this. I've read many, many posts and today I pulled my z-industries chip and put it in my pocket programmer II and read it. It seemed to read ok to the programmer. But when I try to read it with Tunercat, it says the source file is corrupt, or in an unrecognized format. I read one post about some companies placing some kind of code at the beginning of the chip to make it non readable. I've tried reading this chip several times, but come out with the same result. Am I doing something wrong?? If I'm not doing something wrong is there a way around this?
And, if I've missed the answer to this problem in my searching posts, please accept my apology. I truly do spend time searching to find the answer before posting a question.
Thanks
Dan

I'm using the ECM_32B file that tunercat sold me for my car.
Is this the correct one?

Yep, that looks like the correct one acording to the site.
This may sound dumb, but are you choosing that def file on the ecm drop down menu? Mine always seems to revert back to the $42 file.

The ECM_32B has a check mark beside it in the drop down menu, so I would assume I've got that one chosen.
Can I email you the file and maybe you can see if you can at least read it?

I don't have the that def file, so i prolly couldn't help very much.
Have you tried opening the bin in a different software? Maybe try it in winbin and see what happens.
I'd e-mail tunercat and see what they have to say. They seem pretty helpfull when you have problems.

I hadn't thoguht of winbin. Glenn Matus told me for a beginner like me Tunercat would be the best software for me to get started with. I'll do a search and try to find winbin, and email tunercat tomorrow.
Thanks for your help.

I downloaded winbin and get a path/file access error message. There is nothing else running on my computer at the moment. I have the ARAP.bin files I downloaded and even though I have the wrong defination file, I can still read it.
For kicks, I just copied the bin from the chip onto one of the AT29C256 I bought. I haven't checked it on the car yet, but just wanted to see if I could program the chip. I have the device start set at 04000 from other posts I read suggesting this. Tomorrow I'll try the chip and see if it works.

I've opened a "z" prom on a friends ZR-1 vette that we were tuning and found that the checksum was disabled-just reclc. with win bin.

Just wanted to post and let everyone know with the help of "Drive It" (Pete) the problem has been solved. Thanks Pete!!
The problem was I had chosen the AT29C256 chip and was trying to read a 27C128 chip that was in the car. I'm glad Pete found this, and I did multiple searches and didn't see this mentioned. I could have missed it, but I honestly did try to do my homework before posting. Maybe this could be added to one of the tech articles. It's probably old hat to all of you guys, but to a newbie I had no clue I was trying to read the chip with the wrong device chosen.
Anyway I finally got a good read off the chip that was in the car. I can read it with tunercat now, but have no clue what to do first. But I ordered the How to Tune and Modify Chevy Fuel Injection book on a suggestion from Drive It. So when it gets here I'll read it and ask more dumb questions (after I do a search on the subject first )
Anyway just as an experiment I took the bin I read from the chip in the car and put in on one of the AT29C256 chips today. The car seems to run fine with it. So I've got that part down.
So just wanted to say thanks to all that took the time to try and help me.

funstick-Boy, you know not what you are getting yourself into!!! I literally know nothing about this. I'm trying not to be a "leach" and use other people to do the work for me, but I do admit I need help. I try to give back as much or more as I take from TGO, but this is so totally foreign to me it's like chinese. I'm not completely unfamilar with computer programming as I own a machine shop and do CAD/CAM work and am always tweaking my g-code programs to make the machine run better and make parts faster, but this is a lot different than programming a computer chip.
The only thing I did find that I just changed so far is the desired idle rpm. With the 160 t-stat I have in the car, it never gets hot enough to drop to the 750 rpm idle, so I changed the desired idle speed to 750 at a lower temperature. Other than that I'm lost. I read the post about the $32b tuning post, and it doesn't make much sense to me yet. But hopefully when I get the tuning book for chevy fuel injection, that will clear some of it up for me. I ordered it on Friday.
Anyway I'll email you my bin and also the scan data from my autoxray scanner and see what you think I should do first.
Thanks
Dan
