WinALDL HATES ME!!!!!!

OK, I have created the cable at least 12 times using 3 diff. methods (using external battery, computer power, & power from the ALDL port), read all archived posts, messed with the software for about 2 months and nothing I seam to do works! I hook up the cable, run the software, and NOTHING! It's a 90 camaro, 1228746. Is there a certain ritual I need to follow to set it up? I am seconds away from throwing my laptop over a cliff and hanging myself with the damn WinALDL cable (at least that seams to be the only thing it is good for.) Are there any hidden or extra wires that need to go to the ALDL that are not shown in the diagram? (I am currently only using 2; ground & data). Is there a way to check the switching transistor to make sure it is working right? I have decided to go pick up another one tomorrow just in case (I am using the MPS2222A). I am not an idiot, just really pissed off so any help would be appreciated.

First of all, did you make the cable or did you purchase it? I think you made it? Second, what os are you using? W98 seems to work best. Thrid, have you tired craig moates software? Pretty good stuff! Just make sure you do not use windows ME. Also, make sure the com ports are set up correctly. You can download craig's software from his site.

Good luck!

Yes I made the cable, many many times. I am using Win XP Pro (was using Win 95 but didn't work with that either). Haven't tried Moates software because I don't think it supports my 1228746. COM 1 powers up fine, nothing else is using it, and have tested it using other devices....does it need to be set up? This is currently how I have my cable set up.

That's all you need, funny that you said other com1 devices work because if that's the case then there wouldn't be any reason why winaldl shouldn't work. Did you setup winaldl to look on the com1 port and what laptop are you working with? You might want to try a friends computer and/or double check to make certain you didn't mirror the diagram with the wrong pins which is another common mistake. So go back, look at the pins to make sure you aren't flip flop and then double check to make sure the transistor isn't backwards. Since you said other serial devices are working it's gotta be a hardware issue, not software.

I'm using an old Toshiba Tecra 500CDT with a P122 processor that has been completely reformatted with only Win XP Pro installed. Double and triple checked pins and transistor, set up right. I do know that my laptop doesn't supply 12v only around 10.5v, could that have something to do with it? I don't think it is software because the program opens and is set up to COM 1. I just double checked the port with my digital camera and I was able to download the pics so I know it isn't the port. Confusing huh?! I am going to use a different laptop tomorrow and will purchase and install a new transistor, if that doesn't work then I am $hit outa luck!

ok first of all the diagram works ...did u put the 10K in R3???

also i know for a fact that it works with win ME

cos my laptop has winME and it works ....

in Winaldl is that little number by the config button glown red / green???

if u get a blinking green means winaldl is reading the data...

also have u got the transsistor pins right>???
