Fried ECM 1226455 1984 Trans Am

Hi all,

During diagnosing and trying to fix some wiring I accidentally fried my computer (there was 12 volt on something that didn't like power). One of the ICs near the plugs looks roasted and doesn't smell too delicious. If I had such an IC it would be possible to replace it I guess but i do not know what IC to get and replacing the whole unit seems easier.

The part or service number is 1226455., Can I just buy any ECM with this number and transplant the chip? I see just one removable chip in this ECM and it should hopefully still be ok.

The car is a 1984 Trans Am with 5.0 H.O. (L69) engine and th700 automatic transmission. I found the perfect item already on Ebay but since I am in Amsterdam and shipping and customs are annoyingly slow, I wonder if I can just get any 1226455 (so even from a V6 and/or manual) and just exchange the chip.

Also interesting is the fact that the ECM I fried is a re manufactured part. It only has one label with the number 1226455 on it and a C. Also a label number that is 16087373.

What should I do? Buy the part on ebay that says its from a 1984 trans am with H.O. L69 engine with automatic? Or just swap the chip with a locally available 1226455?

Best regards,

Robert

Swap the chip into a locally obtained ECM. The chip is the only difference between them. A 1226455 is a 1226455.

Awesome! Thanks A friend of mine said he maybe has an ECM from a 1984 V6 Firebird. So if it has 1226455 as a part number it should work after I swapped the chip? And it doesnt even has to be from an f-body bit an 1226455 from whatever car should work too? Sorry for asking so much but I better ask things then just fry another ECM or damage more parts of my car I suppose..

Thanks and best regards

Robert.

Re: Fried ECM 1226455 1984 Trans Am

I am waiting for some replies from local parts dealers, but just to be curious: is there a way to check what prom should have been in my car? The remanufactured unit that was installed in mine has CJY on it. Is this the correct one? Because so much has been tampered with on my car I just want to check if this is correct.

Regards,

Robert

CJY is for a '84 Camaro or Firebird with the L69 5.0l engine, 700R4 transmission and California emissions (tighter then Federal).

Ah, cool, thanks

So this prom is correct apart from the fact I am a long way from California. What would be the code for federal emissions? Is there some list where I can look this stuff up myself? Google did not help me.

Sorry for all my questions, I am still a noob

Regards,

Robert.

Re: Fried ECM 1226455 1984 Trans Am

A friend sent me his spare 1226455 and I transplanted the chip and its working again, woohoo! Thanks for the help Local parts dealers asked 150 euros (thats around 190 dollars) for an ECM. It seemed a bit expensive. But almost all USA parts are rare here in Europe.

Robert.

As you say, I'm not surprised at how much that ECM is in Europe.

From your previous post, I don't know what the BCC would be for a federal emissions chip. Then again, I may be able to find out...

Re: Fried ECM 1226455 1984 Trans Am

My friend only asked 15 euro's. Also there were plenty of ECMs on ebay and I found one with the same prom and including shipping and handling and even customs it costs me 41 euro's. It will be a spare unit. The pre calculating and paying of customs fees is new on ebay. It speeds up delivery as the package gets trough customs faster and no nasty surprises .

Thanks for the help. If it is too much trouble it is not needed to check for the other prom code, unless it gives me an extra 100 horsepower or so :P

Robert

Ah, awesome, thanks

I dont see these chips seperate, just complete ECMs. I am just happy all works again and the chip I have belongs in it.

Robert
