Hypertech Thermomaster

So I recently bought this car, the 1987 IROC-Z & the guy that sold it to me gave me this hypertech chip with the car. He said he bought it but decided not to put it in.

Here's a link of the exact chip I have..

I'm wondering if I should install this? Any thoughts?

Re: Hypertech Thermomaster

I think with the thermomaster they recommend installing a cooler thermostat and maybe removing the cats. If you can do those two things I would install it. I did the samething on my 87 Formula when I first got it back in 1989. It ran much better!

Re: Hypertech Thermomaster

Yeah it seems like one of it's main functions is to turn the radiator fans on at a lower temperature.. along with some other stuff. I have my radiator fans on a manual toggle switch so that doesn't concern me.

I actually just decided to try to sell it because to me it's not worth even using. :P I'd rather just get a custom prom if anything.

Re: Hypertech Thermomaster

When I first started messing around with my Formula the first thing I did was put a chip in it. I added a lot of modifications to my engine and the car still ran very well with the after market chip (not custom). Only when I built a 383 with big cam did I have to get a custom chip to make it run better. When I dynoed the car the first dyno was with the after market off the shelf chip and it performed very well. As I went thru the custom chips I had they did perform better but all in all only about 10-15 hp and tq. The most I got out of the custom chip was better drivability and idle. So I guess what I'm trying to say unless you are making some major modifications a custom chip would probably be a waste of money. Being a mass air car the maf sensor gives the emc the info on the amount of air the engine is using and then the ecm adjust fuel and timing accordingly. The thermomaster chip it probably going to richen up your mixture and throw in some timing which should make your car run better.
