OBD 1.5 - OBDI exchange

I'm thinking of using my '7730 ECM out of my 1990 Firebird to use an a 1994 that I'm working on. I know this is supposed to be 3rd Gen related, but my car is probably going to use the MS I have and want to use my ECM in a friends' car for tunability. It's also getting a 3500 top end like mine, but am shying away from MS for him because he needs to pass emissions. The MS still has bugs as far as SES lights and EGR, and if I use it piggyback, the SES lgiht will come on because the o2 will not be registering what the ECM is expecting. So I thought it might be easier to use the spare ECM out of my car for his to maintain all the functions, along with gaining tunability.

How involved is the swap if anyone has experienced it. What do I need to look for? (ie is the speed sensor compatable/EGR etc)

TIA,
-john

Re: OBD 1.5 - OBDI exchange

first, which '94 engine setup? I realize you mentioned 3500 top end, but it doesn't help a lot (at least for me). The '7730 won't run an opti, and won't run sequential injection. It will run a DIS setup., and run batch fire injection.

The '7730 has about 12 different code masks. Some will only run a digital EGR, others a vacuum EGR. Some masks have code for an E trans, others do not. Although for the 'E' trans I believe the RAM chip needs to be loaded. Which is a different ECM service number. Please list what is required to run the '94.

Re: OBD 1.5 - OBDI exchange

Sorry. '94 3.4 (with a 3.5l top end) V6 Camaro DIS, auto trans and IIRC digital EGR.

Batch fire is OK, and I'm fimiliar with the '7730 working with the ICM, but is the speedo going to work with it? Again I'm not that fimiliar with the '94 OBD 1.5 setup and only slightly fimiliar with the '7730, and just trying to weigh the options.

How difficult is the physical swap of the units themselves?

Re: OBD 1.5 - OBDI exchange

The DIS is no problem. The digital EGR can be done with the '7730 using code mask $A1 or $88. If switched to a vacuum EGR then mask $8D can be used (recommended mask).

IIRC the '94 ECM is under the hood? If so then you need to look at using the '7727 ECM. That is the under hood version of the '7730. May even find one with a MEMCAL for a V6 and mask $A1 already in it (Corsica/Beretta).

Note that the under hood ECMs use a different connector then the under dash ECMs.

IIRC all Camaro's & Firebird's went to E transmissions in '94. You will need to check this. If it is an E trans then something will need to be done to run the trans.

The above masks ($A1, $88, and $8D) are all SD. IF the current setup is MAF, then a MAP sensor will need to be added. If the trans is a non-'E' then the speedo buffered by the '7730 will most likely work.
