OBDII code reading

Hello,

I would like to be able to read the error codes of a '99 chevrolet venture and a '99 chrysler 300M .

Both of the cars are OBDII.
The laptop based programs I found where a bit expensive (+/- $200 incl. hardware).

I don't want to datalog and tune the cars, just read the codes.
Is there some inexpensive software and do-it-yourself hardware available ?

Thank's for the help.
Gr.
