i'm pulling a tpi system from an 86 t/a and swapping it into an 89 305 tbi firebird formula but there is no ecm with the tpi do i need to buy a tpi ecm or can i just have the tbi computer retuned or something?

The TBI ECM can work, but I wouldn't use it. Best bet would be to get a 1227730 ECM. This was used on the '90-92 TPI f-body's. Will need to do some re-pinning of the ECM harness connectors but other then that there are GM calibrations available for it.

Repinning is easy, is the act of disengaging a pin from the connector and re-inserting it into another location. However, you do need to be able to follow a wiring diagram, or a list of connections to change. Over on the TPI board there is a long thread that is titled something to the affect "Converting from TBI to TPI."

This thread contains everything you need to know about the conversion.

Did the TPI engine come with a wiring harness? If so, it may be easier to swap that in place of the TBI harness. It would be a MAF setup for that year. I recommended the '730 ECM which is speed density. The harness would be different thent he '86 harness.

yeah i'm going to pull the wiring harness with the tpi so what's different with speed density?

A speed density (SD) system uses manifold absolute pressure (MAP), an intake air temperature sensor, along with a volumetric efficiency table to calculate the incoming air flow. A mass air flow (MAF) system uses the MAF sensor to directly read the airflow into the engine. Both systems use the airflow to figure out how much fuel to inject.

If the '86 TPI engine comes with the MAF sensor, wiring harness, and ECM, just bolt all of it in together. This makes it a simple drop in. Pull out the TBI harness and ECM and sell those on the classifieds.

Here are the numbers that I know of:

1227165
88999194
88999128

The MEMCAL is the part that makes it fit a particular vehcile. It contains the calibration information.
