Scan Tools

I am in the market for a scan tool to learn how to tune my 1989 GTA. I have come up with the following Scanners:

1.Autoxray AutoXray EZ-Link 10110 for OBD-1 $175.99
2.Autoxray EZ Scan 3000 for OBD-1 $269.95
3.Sunpro Scanner Sun-CP9150 for OBD-1&2 $379.95

The following is a description of the two Autoxray scanners

EZ-SCAN 3000, EZ-Scan OBD-I Scanners are the most user-friendly, cost-efficient, and portable automotive diagnostic scanners available. In seconds, EZ-Scan Scanners give users the same information that dealers use on '83-'95 Domestic vehicles. Comprehensive features include: read and display live sensor information, show trouble and pending codes in English, access oxygen sensor tests, and display monitoring tests. Its affordability coupled with abundant features and upgradability make EZ-Scan Scanners ideal personal tools to complement any mechanic's current tool set. Just turn to AutoXray, of course. FEATURES: Scan Collects All Values from Vehicles On-Board Computer, Detetcs Trouble and Pending Codes, Defines Codes in Plain English, Set Measurement Units in SAE/Metric, Live Data Stream Monitoring, 29 Frame Capture Mode, Set Capture Frame Interval from 0500ms to 5000ms, Reset Check Engine Lights, Quick Step™ Data Navigation, Customize Data Views, Internet Upgradeable, VEHICLE COVERAGE: GM '82 - 95 (12 & 16 pin ALDL), Ford '83 - 95 (EEC IV), Chrysler '83 - 95 (SCI), Jeep '91 - 95 (SCI), CONTENTS: 3000 Scanner, GM OBD-I Cable, Ford OBD-I Cable, Chrysler OBD-I Cable, EZ-Update, Case, Users Manual, Reg. What it scans 1982-1995 GM 12 pin ALDL vehicles,(except diesel) What's included EZ-Link Scanner, GM Cable, Manual Regular $199. 1 year warranty,3 year warranty if you register on-line with AutoXray

Now I did a search and found this old thread on the subject

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...=scanning+tool

Is it still people's thoughts to get a lap top and load the free programs rather than buy scan tools. Can anybody advise me on the difference between the two autoxray scanners? Sorry for the information overload but I thought I would bring this topic up to date for others wanting information or an opinion on the subject.

Those diagnostic tools are junk compared to datamaster. There is not much difference between the two autoxrays. I actually started tuning with one. If you have a laptop then get DATAMASTER!!!!!!!

11sORbust thank you for your comment. Please provide some more information on obtaining Data Master such as where you down load it from and is there a cost to this program. Furthermore, one must need a cable from the lap top to the ECM diagnostic port. Where do you get it from and how much does it cost? Any other relevant information for someone who is just getting started would be useful. Thnaks.

IMO, I would much rather give my money to Andrew(the link I posted) . He has been doing this for years. Not to mention he gives a discount for datamaster. The downloadable/free version is locked to 20 logs. His cables are self powered and work flawless!

i haven't ever used any of the scan tools you asked about, but the ones i have used, all of which are way more expensive all have a slower update & can't log anywhere near as long as the ones you can use with a lap top.

i have played with the free version of Data Master & it does a very good job of logging, it has a good user interface & is easy to setup & use. very nice software

i use TunerPro, it came with my Autoprom & cable. TunerPro is more involved in setup as you have to download the right files needed for your application, it is also a very nice piece of
software & it handles my bin editing & chip burning needs.
