OLD Accel DFI computer question(1994 style DFI)

Ok, this is about a car I used to own a long time back. A 91 Trans Am. I replaced the 305 with a new GM crate motor, a ZZ1. It got a new accel dfi computer. Not all that long after I got it back, a few months or so, while driving home late at night, it flat out died on the road. The stock computer would get it running fine, but the accel reconnected, and it wouldn't start. I had it towed back to the shop that did the initial install of everything. They claimed they sent the computer back to accel and accel said that I must have jump started the car with the cables backwards(this while I was driving down the road mind you). The shop told me accel wouldn't cover the computer and I had to pay 500 for, what they claimed(yet again), was their "shop" computer, not even a new one since I was pretty p-oed at this point. They told me the accel had no protection if jumpers cables were installed backwards, but my stock computer did and thats why it was fried. This car somehow being jump started while driving 45 mph down US1.

Anyway... This happened in 1994. So, knowing all this, does anyone have a clue what REALLY went wrong? If accel would really claim the car was jumped backwards? If the shop was screwing me around? What I SHOULD have done to properly get them to fix it for free?

I know I don't have the car anymore, but this has always bugged me and when I replace the motor in my current 1991, I don't wanna be railroaded like that again should a problem arise.

Anyone have any ideas at all? I'd really like to avoid this problem in the future.
