ECM-Swap ( 870 to 165 )
I own a 85-IROC which was originally a 305 with the 870-ECM. My MAF is still the Bosch-Unit ( P/N: 0 280 213 002 / 14 081 243 ). I swapped the 305 for a 350 and the 870 for a 165 ( includes changing the wiring ). I think, there are some more guys who did this mod ... anybody got problems ( error-codes ) concerning the ECM-MAF-combo ? - I heard, this kind of MAF ( is it digitally or analogue ??? ) canīt work with the 165-ECM ( code 36, tried 2 different bins, $32B-ABWT and $6E-APYU ... no success ) ?
Thanks, Uwe

The $32B can be setup to work with that MAF. The '85 MAF is a digital, or frequency MAF, the '86-'89 MAF's are analog output.
In the $32B bin file go to location $14 and set bit 2 to a 0. that will tell the ECM to read the MAF as a digital unit. The $6E mask does not have this capability, so can't use it.

There must be something wrong with your information : I burned 2 chips, one with byte 14 = 80 ( digital MAF ) and the other with byte 14 = 84 ( analog MAF ). With the first one installed, I got an errorcode 34, my scanner shows an airflow of 0 g/sec. With the second chip the car idles fine and I got no error-code. - Whatīs the deal here ???

Maybe your MAF is not what you think it is, or it is bad. In your first post the ECM was throwing code 36, now it is throwing code 34. If the ECM/code works with that MAF with bit 2 as a 1 then go with it.

Helms Manual describes 2.8L MAF as Digital, 5.0 as Analog. I do believe other swappers have found the '85 MAF to be analog. Big difference in later year MAFs - they have hole drilled and tapped for bracket - not much affect on programming.

I have run both MAF's on an 870 and a 165 computer with no problem.........
