No, the '89 ECM has VATs which the '88 doesn't have. So it won't allow the engine to start.

I have ECM 1228063,

will either of these work for me?

1227302 or 1227169

I don't believe either of the others will work (isn't the 1227302 a V6 MAF ECM?). The '88 year 1228063 is a one year ECM. This makes it a little more difficult to obtain. But is the only one that will work.

I am correct in saying that your car doesn't have VATS? Little resistor in the ignition key?

RBob.

{edit: in a pinch a 1227747 ECM from a truck will work. Just need to be sure it is from a V8 305 w/automatic. As the PROM that comes with it will also need to be used. The '8063 PROM will not work in the '747. There are a lot of '747 ECMs out there.).

The 8746 and the 7747 are your two other options. The 8063 does have VATS but its disabled. I had purchased an 8746 (kind of a dud) and ran into the VATS problem, of course even after I disabled it the ecm would only work intermittently. If your going to use one youll have to get a prom with the VATS disabled. If you have equipment to burn another prom its no big deal but most people dont have that sort of stuff. You could have someone burn you a chip for a nominal ammount to cover costs. IIRC I think some of the aftermarket chips came with no VATS. Id have to look. Im sure there are some floating around for cheap.

EDIT: I checked a hyperjunk chip I ahd and they still have VATS enabled.

According to a Cross reference Chart, the 1228063 ECM was also used on the 4.3L V-6 88-90. Will I be able to take the ECM as a direct plug-in or I will need to swap out the PROM and other items?

I think that might have been the 8062. AFAIK, 8063 was only in use for one year.

Yes, any '8063 ecm will work. Just pop your prom in and go.

Edit: you may also have to switch calpaks if the engine in the car wasnt a V8. With the firebird that wont be a problem.
