Tolerance to mods: MAF vs. Speed Density

I know this has to be out there somewhere (this subject has to have been beaten to death already), but the searches I've ran didn't answer my question, which is:

How much more tolerant to mods (w/o PROM tuning) is the MAF system since its directly measuring airflow? i.e., could you hypothetically run a miniram/large cam (like, say, a 230 degree @ .050 lift, etc) combo successfully (like, no hiccups or driveability issues) with a stock MAF system?

Does anybody here mod MAF systems? can you get higher flowing MAF sensors for an 85-89 system?

Thanks

Reading thru the Final Answer series of postings at the DIY PROM area should help you.

Either system needs to be taylored for any engine change to optimize performance. MAPs just seem a little easier for ost people to grasp.

There's a ton of info about converting to MAP systems around here, if you're worried about the MAF limitations. But, the limitations aren't too bad.

I've got maf, miniram and 230* cam with no problems. Drives and idles like a stocker.

Hey 89gta383...

You aren't running a stock chip with that are you? The reason I ask is that (depending on what heads you have) I have a very similar combo--377 stroker, comp cams extreme energy 274 (XE274H-10, 230/236 deg @0.050, 0.48/0.49 lift), World Products SR heads, stock TPI (I am planning on an LT1 intake and either some porting or better heads, my setup is faaaar from optimal). Of course similar still means different, but I'm curious to hear what it took for people with similar levels of mods to do to get going.

I ran the stock chip with the stock intake, smaller cam, afr heads, slp headers. Car ran fine.

I burned this chip I'm running now. All I did was raise the idle to 850, change the values in the first maf table, change the convertor lockup, injector constant, rev limiter, timing curves, and wot fuel. I'm still having problems with a 160 blm right now at idle, so I need to swap intakes and gaskets to try and fix it this weekend. Once I stop it from vacuum leaking, I'll re-tune it.
