I'll continue to use my $20 laptop, and use the difference on going fast. There's freeware software that is alot cheaper then that 350, and when palms get down to $20 I'll think about it.

Just another view

$20 Laptops

Check e-bay.

Any first-generation pentium (90mhz and up) or late model 486 (66mhz+) and up will do. 16MB RAM and 700mb of HDD is more than plenty for an ALDL laptop (a 30 minute highway trip only generates a 128k WinALDL log).

The free ALDL software just needs Win95, so heavy hardware is quite un-needed.

As for heft, look into the Liberetto line of laptops, they are very small (almost PDA sized), or a similar model made by HP (the HP model is the size of a Sharp Wizard, with a 75mhz cpu)... A tad bit more expensive, but if you want something tiny...

Most of this stuff goes for really cheap on e-bay...

To use the language of the day,
It's about Networking.

Making friends, doing favors, and what goes around comes around. I've done lots of deals that I could have made 10% on and no one would know, but I just swap stuff for stuff, and have been able to gather some neat stuff. IMO, eBay is anti-hotrodder. Hotrodding used to be about sharing the love of the sport, now, like so much of life it's about money.
