Need help removing A/C on an '86 Iroc-Z28
Hey guys, I've looked around on the forums here for the past few days hoping to find a thread about how to remove the A/C unit and everything attached to it step-by-step, but to no avail. Why isn't there a sticky on this?
The only information I've come across so far is:
1. Remove the tubing
2. Remove the box and the evaporator
3. Remove the accumulator
4. Remove the condenser
5. Remove the pulley.
I'm aware that I'm doing this; I have t-tops, and it doesn't get too bad here in Indiana, so no deterring me about taking it out. I'm aware that my vents won't work after I take all this out, but I'll take care of that afterwards.
However, I would like to know how to evacuate refrigerant out of the system. Some helpful tips would be nice. Also, some pictures of the job being done might help as well.
I appreciate any help on this topic.
EDIT: Also, I have 3 v-belts, so I'm not in immediate need of a replacement pulley, unlike everyone with a serpentine belt setup.

Where in Indians do you live? Because its been roasting here the last few summers including this summer, I just got my ac reinstalled because I was tired of sweating to death in my own car.

Central northern Indiana, in Elkhart. I don't have much of a problem with roasting per se, because I usually drive my other car most of the time. Haven't had any issues with getting too hot with the T-Tops out and the windows down, especially in the high 90's we had just last week.

See your almost 3 hours from me, more near michigan so it might be cooler there, and I DD mine so that also plays a big factor. But to answer your question. To remove thr freon on the system you can either go to a shop, or depress a scrater valve to release it, thr second option is illegal though, after thst, remove the lines, remove the compressor and brackets, remove the dryer, remove the heater box to remove the evaporator, remove the radiator, then remove the condenser and re install the radiator and coolent. If you keep the heat your have to find an ac delete box for the heater core.

Alright, cool, thanks for that. I'll see about getting that sucker taken out, because it's honestly just taking up some space that I could use.

Yeah the hardest things are the evaporator and the condenser, the condenser is only hard because you have to remove the radiator to remove it, also if you eject the freon the illegal way, stand away from it, like behind it while depressing thr valve, or you could find the tool to remove the valve it's self for ease of removal. Just don't stand in front of it and keep your hand covered, like with a glove.

If you're careful you may be able to do it without removing the rad. Take off the upper support and hold the rad out of the way while you pull out the condenser. I did on my own but it would be MUCH easier with someone to hold the rad.
