1987 factory DUAL FAN wiring setup - PHOTO REQUEST only

I'm almost done with a month-long harness resurrection in which all P.O. messes have been fixed. Today's project is bringing the factory fans back to original wiring state.

A previous owner had removed the relays and such and wired them so that they ran constantly; even with the ignition key in 'accessory' mode!

I have pulled a harness from an '86 donor car and although it is a match (same amount of wires, same colors) it only had one fan relay attached (I have no idea what engine or how many fans were originally in there).

QUESTION:
How many fan relays did my car originally have? Searches I've found seem to say (2), however, those are usually on '88 up cars with oval relays on the opposite side.

Does anyone have overhead photos they can post here of the factory dual fan setup - including relay photos and mounting locations so that I can match it? I don't need extreme closeups, however, various angles would be great.

'87 dual fans have one relay per fan.
The one on your '86 harness is correct.
The secondary was tied to the fan switch only ('88+ the secondary was also tied to come on with the primary whit the A/C on). It was independent of the ECM harness.

Thanks for your response! Would you happen to know if the second relay you mentioned is the same size/part number? Also, where would the fan switch on my 87 305 tpi be located (hopefully its still there: the previous owner added to the 'hack job modifications' stereotype that unfortunately related to our cars).

Same relay since both fans are the same.
Fan switch, between exhaust ports 6 & 8, passenger side.

Re: 1987 factory DUAL FAN wiring setup - PHOTO REQUEST only

If someone owns a 1987, please send me photos of both relays mounted as well as a wire trail leading toward the firewall. I feel like 'm so close to having the system put back together, but I only want to splice/crimp once! Thanks in advance and if someone needs certain photos from a pretty much stock 87, let me know!

Re: 1987 factory DUAL FAN wiring setup - PHOTO REQUEST only

Update: I am making good progress now that my loom has been removed up to the firewall, exposing any and all remaining splices, cuts, tie offs, butt connections etc.

Looking on Ebay, I've seen recent postings for the factory harnesses for an 87 dual fan setup. I'm going to post a photo of the connector for the second relay (courtesy of ad http://www.ebay.com/itm/87-Camaro-Fi...12fa06&vxp=mtr).

If you have a similar car, please send me a photo of the other end of this connection and where it is located on your car. If there is a part number on it, I'll take that too!Thank you! 1987 Iroc w/dual fan setup.

Majobis, I'm trying to do the same thing with my 87 Iroc. I need the same photos. Did you ever get any?

As you can see, I didn't get any photos, however, my electrician neighbor looked over my schematics for me yesterday and was able to show me every wire to connect except for one last solid black ground which could end up connecting to a few different places.

In a nutshell,
  • Both fans will have a plug attached to a black and black/red wire
  • All green/white attach together - deals primarily with second fan
  • All tan/white attach together - related to ignition and 3-wire alternator plug connection.
  • All orange attach together - including fused power from + cable
  • All black attach together (still need to track one more)
  • You will need to have two relays and relay connectors (they can be bought online - I got mine at tpiparts.net)
I was unable to locate a male version to connect to the plug above, so I snipped the female part I had and at Home Depot, I bought a junction box and circle connectors. Each connector crimps to each wire's end and they all attach to their respective post on the junction box. I bought some shielding material as well that will wrap around the box once I confirm everything works.

The box will be held in place with two sided tape and will be primarily hidden behind the battery against the wheelwell. It won't be stock in appearance, but it will look neat and professional. I'm hoping to be done within the week because I stopped the project after deciding to paint the engine bay since a lot of stuff had been removed (both tanks, battery etc.) for this job as well as to access my temperature gauge sender to get rid of the autometer pod and get my stock gauge working instead. I'll post pics of this project once done.

Re: 1987 factory DUAL FAN wiring setup - PHOTO REQUEST only

Here's a repair harness I created to repair a hacked/damaged 87 fan harness, I am willing to sell these, not sure if it's appropriate to post that here or not.
I will look at doing the 1988/89 repair harness as well with the newer relay connector if there is interest in that as well.

A 90-92 is very similiar to that with the exception of the relay pigtail ... If you want more detailed pics of a 90-92 let me know and I can get you fan related pics of this harness.

In this pic you can see where the harness connects to the battery cable and from this connector it goes to a fuse holder.

Re: 1987 factory DUAL FAN wiring setup - PHOTO REQUEST only

im having similar problem with my fans. they have not worked ever. p.o. spliced everything.

i replaced the entire engine harness with a used one.

i had 1 ecu that the fans would not kick on jumping a and b on aldl, and one that did.

i noticed one splice, looked like connecting 2 thick orange wires together with a black wire. see pic. after i took pic, i cut that black wire off and taped it up.

i then replaced all the relay couplers with new ones. i dont know what i did but the 20a fuse on the fender by the battery was now blown, and now the fans wont come on with the good ecu jumping a and b.
it is possible 2 of the wires rubbed together. im getting frustrated.

to original poster - i will post pics of mine if you want, videos if needed. but i fear my harness is not as virgin as i thought, until i know what that splice was for.

The orange wire from ecu I have is for the fuel pump that is fused in with 20amp fuse and red wire plugs into battery power. All other wires go to relay. The harness I have is from an 88. The orange wire from relays is plugged into power right on battery.

Wow, sadly it looks like your P.O. and mine were the same damn person; I really wish people either knew more about electrical or just didn't try to 'fix' it themselves when they don't know what they're doing. It took me months to try and fix most of my wiring issues because of P.O....I just want to smack that man

On the flat relay connector, can you explain where the wires go to please? I'm looking to put mine back to original also but I'm having some problems with finding some wires. Does the black one go to the coolant fan switch?

I'm the starter of this thread. Here's how everything got put together and has been working flawlessly the past five years starting with the relay located to the right of the battery - facing the firewall from the front of the car - and the other two shots are a continuation below the relay. (see photos).
