Dual TPI fans better than single electric?

Hey guys,

The single electric fan for my 84 TA keeps my mild build 350 cool around town just fine, but when I turn the AC on, the temp just creeps right up into the red. On the highway, cools fine with the AC on, so that tells me my fan is weak or not powerful enough.

So, I found a set of TPI fans on Ebay for $30.00 and was wondering if they'd be an upgrade over my factory Single fan? I know the LS1 and LT1 fans cool better, but since mine cools just fine now except for the AC, I guess I don't see an issue.

I would want to wire them so that they came on at the same time, to act just like my single fan does now. So both on when temp reaches switch temp and both on when AC is turned on.

I would think that I could use an aftermarket relay to handle the upgraded amps, and uses the factory fan power wire to do this. So that I would use the factory set up, but when the power goes to the relay, that's when it woudl kick the fans on. Does this sound feasable?

Any thoughts?

yes, I went from a single electric fan to lt1 fans and my car cools much better then the single. I think I need a bigger alternator though as with everything on at night and both fans on the lights get dim. My stock fan didn't seem to turn much rpm so It could have been worn out too.

Though I went from a mechanical fan to dual electrics (both of which turn on either with AC or head temp), there may be conversion info that would be helpful to you:

Thanks James.

I'm currently bidding on a dual fan TPI set up (Don't want the hassle of modding a LT1 or LS1 Set up.

I was thinking of setting it up so both fans run when my fan switch tells my factory fan to come on now.

I was thinking of using my factory fan harness to provide the power to the relay which will power the dual fans. The relay hooked to the battery, kind of like how my fuel pump relay is set how. "Hot on" from the fuse box to run the relay hooked to the battery.

This way, the "hot on" would come from the factory fan harness power wire (the one that goes to the fan now) So when the car would normally tell my single fan to turn on, both new fans would come on.

Do yout think this would work?

That's how mine is setup. One fan used the factory wiring and the second one I hooked up another relay that is wired up like the factory one and taps into the factory power on wire . Iirc I used a 30a circuit breaker to connect the second relay to the battery. Eventually I'm just get a cyl head temp switch for the second fan so they don't come on ay the same time or when both aren't needed.

I already have a cylinder head fan switch that controls when my current single electric fan comes on. So what I want to do, is just use that signal to trigger both fans at the same time. So both are either "on" or "off".
