having trouble alling 31x19 griffin radiator

hello,

my car is an 84 trans am, and i just recently ordered a 31x19 griffin pro series. it fits width wise, but it appears to be just a little bit too high. i've heard that u can trim (or remove) the rubber isolators on the bottom of the rack, but i've also heard thats a bad idea due to road vibration.

has anyone installed these in a firebird? i've seen mostly camaro's with this particular sizxe... was hoping i won't have to downgrade because the next lower size is 16" high

any ideas? i just posted this real quick on lunch break at my work, so i apologize for misspellings :P

I don't know about the Pro series but I used the generic circle track one that was 31x19 and 1.25" tubes (it was extremely cheap at the time). I trimmed the isolators, used a bicycle inner tube to prevent it from making metal to metal contact anywhere, and bent a new upper mount for it with my hands (I have gorrilla hands apparently).

Some people didn't care the fan shroud being held with bolts, but I could rivet it later if I get any free time.

Hey I need one of those aluminum things you made, I have a griffin in a 92 Z and it has been too tall for five years now. I have zip ties holding everything together which is extremely *******. How much to make me one of those things but I would like for it to fit my original dual fans.

Re: having trouble alling 31x19 griffin radiator

I have enough on my plate with broken crap recently. I still have fiberglass molds for fender flares and non-ac heater boxes just sitting in the garage.

You could make your own. It would probably cost you $20-$50 in supplies. I used steel for the upper mount a nice sheet of aluminum for the fan shroud. The shroud I used small rubber hose on the edges which I used some glue to keep it there. That way the shroud didn't bang against my radiator or dig up fins. I riveted some support bars to it to keep it from distorting. Turned out pretty well for just throwing it together.

Ill give it a try but I am not as talented as you at that stuff. I can wire pretty well but fab work I suck at. If you dont mind post plenty of pictures with measurements if you have them. The measurements would help a ton and how you bent the metal.

Re: having trouble alling 31x19 griffin radiator

Measurement depends on your radiator, fan depth you want to mount, and how much room you need for hoses. I basically took measurements of grill area, marked that out, decided I wanted around 2" deep shroud, and measured another 2" off those marks. I made a template out of cardboard and found it was pretty close to the lower radiator hose and power steering so I made the width smaller by making another cut and bending that in. I bent it using a 2x4 and clamps on a work bench.

I didn't tack weld anything I just cut some extra pieces of metal and used sheet metal screws to support the corners where I cut them to bend. If you search around Google plenty of people have made sheet metal or fiberglass ones.

Re: having trouble alling 31x19 griffin radiator

Thanks for your help guys. I went back and looked at it, and just trimmed the top rubber isolator a little bit. Then i drilled new holes in my fan shroud, rebolted it up and used rebar ties to seperate the bottom fans from bangin around. Test drove it and checked the hoses and nothing seems to be vibrating or bangin on anything. I'll keep my eye on it to see if anything weird happens but eh... mission successful!
