need to re-wire coolant temp sensor

i took my 89 gta tpi to a shop today to put in a new catalyctic in hopes of completing "operation pass emissions", and the shop decided to run a full diagnostic on it (without asking me, and charging me for it) and they came across a few things. my coolant temp sensor i guess has been rigged. my fans always come on when the key is turned, and the "mechanic" didnt really feel like telling me too much about it, other than he want to charge me 400 big ones to re-wire it. i'm not that dumb... anyways, if anyone can walk me through the wiring system, that would be awesome. i went to take some pics of it and stuff, but really wasnt too sure which wires i was to be looking at.

any help would be amazing on this.

Re: need to re-wire coolant temp sensor

Do you have the single electric fan setup? And are you asking how to wire it up the stock way? There's tons of info on that you can find by doing a search on the cooling board, or also look at the technical articles section. In the electric portion your fan system is explained, or we can give you other links, just need to know what fan you have now.

Re: need to re-wire coolant temp sensor

i have the dual fan.

searched the engine to see which one it was. didnt see a vin plate, but had some number i pulled off of it to hint that its the 305 (its info when run through a carfax or dmv says its the 350) and got the following:

10088015
1948 jyy
17089024

looks like all aftermarket stuff for a 305. it's all good, in time, i was planning on swapping for a 305 anyways.

thanks for the help.

Re: need to re-wire coolant temp sensor

just dug through all the tech stuff, and only came across one article on my quest to restore factory settings. the guy had some weird switch that was falling out of the dash, while trying to inspect it, the connector came undone. and since i have only had it for a few days, and have been focusing on my emissions adventure, i have not had time to pull out the dash to find out what it was connected to, and what it does. maybe he had his fans rigged to it. he also has a red led to the right of the steering wheel on the dash. i'll have to pop the dash open, and see what this guy was doing.

Re: need to re-wire coolant temp sensor

what you need to look for is on the back of the engine on the drivers side... Right at the bas of the head and block it will tell you what type of v8 it is... My guess is that you have a 5.7 350... there is no 5.7 305 that i know of unless its bored out and stroked... I would say check there first and your gunna need a flash light and some cleaner or brush to get the build up of dirt

Re: need to re-wire coolant temp sensor

Figured out shortly after its the 305. Never got quite around to the fans and CTS though. Sti still have no clue what the dash switch and led are for. I found bigger problems the previous guy left me. Most of it is just about figured out though now. But for some strange reason, I'm broke now! Ha.
