Car reaches operating temp, and reservoir starts boiling.

Car reaches operating temp, and reservoir starts boiling.
I asked in another thread, and then noticed that there is a nifty cooling thread here (sorry!)
so my problem is, my temp gauge will go up nice and slow, from 100 to about 160. real slow. (does this happen to anyone else?)
if I drive with the a/c on it will go past the 220 mark, and the coolant in the reservoir will be boiling before it reaches that (around 190 i would say).
I replace the rad cap, and the car does have the air dam.
any ideas?

I'm guessing your thermostat is stuck open if your temps are rising ultra slow.
Are you running 50/50 or straight water in the cooling system?

50/50. though thats what i have been putting in. the previous owner might have not...
yea it took a good amount of time in traffic for it to go past 220. I would say I drove about 90 to 100 blocks total? (about 8 to ten miles) and it was boiling when i stopped. majority of the travel was stop and go.
and just driving home now about 8 miles again, it slowly went up to 160.

Yep. Thermostat is stuck. Sounds like the symptoms I had when mine stuck. With a new 180° stat in there now, it's up to 180° in about 2 blocks.
Not sure what to say on the reservoir.

Are the electric fans working? I'd say if it's boiling over before the guage reaches 240-260 then your guage sender is bad or the guage is bad giving a false reading. Fans do no good on hiway, so it's staying cool without fan - but in town you need fans operating at a good temp (like on at 195, off at 180). Factory fan switch is set to on at like 220 and off at 200 - way to hot in my opinion - but GM made these cars run hot to get better emissions numbers. Check on those fans!
