leaking a lot of coolant, from mystery place between oil pan and transmission.

1991 firebird, V6

leaking a lot of coolant, from mystery place between oil pan and transmission. I have no idea where it is coming from or how to fix. any ideas? radiator hoses, heater hoses, thermostat, upper intake manifold are all dry. idk where else to look for leaks but it is all coming out between the trans and oil pan. looks like a giant hershey kiss. here are some pics...

you can see the drain hole, but I have no idea how to attack this problem...

I'm assuming this is a 700r4? If so there are coolant lines at the top of the transmission on the passengers side. That would be my best bet.

Yes, those lines only carry tranny fluid. The freeze plug is the only likely source in this case.

Re: leaking a lot of coolant, from mystery place between oil pan and transmission.

i had the same problem and i thought it was a freeze plug too. we got to the pugs and they were dry as a bone..... turns out it was an intake manifold gasket. make sure your intake manifold is deffinatly dry befor pulling the trans and everything out. im just saying from experience...... seeing those plugs dry after all that work deffinatly sucked.

Re: leaking a lot of coolant, from mystery place between oil pan and transmission.

before ANY of that, go simple, there are two hoses that run into the firewall on the passenger side above the bell housing, those go to the heater core, make sure they are not leaking, i love how everyone jumps to freeze plug...

I changed the intake manifold gasket a month ago, and it is dry. the lines are all dry, and the only place left is the freeze plugs. I used some blue devil head gasket stop leak, and it fixed the leaking freeze plugs. just a temporary fix till I have time to put the car on my friends lift, and drop the trans and whatnot to get to the darn plugs.

EEEEEWWWWWW Not only does that work on those leaks, but that kind of product if used to much has been known to plug up radiators as well. So be very careful.

Re: leaking a lot of coolant, from mystery place between oil pan and transmission.

i would check you heater core hoses on the firewall they could be loose and leaking down onto the trany. I had that problem on mine a few months ago my hose clamp on the heater core hoses wasnt tight. Hope this helps.

Re: leaking a lot of coolant, from mystery place between oil pan and transmission.

On my 87 IROC the lines to the oil cooler leaked back about 6 months or so ago. Took me forever to find where it was coming from. It was on the drivers side and you can't see exactly where it's coming from unless you actually get under the car and look. Talk about a pain in the a$$.
