Code 14, 86 camaro, severe overheating... Help...?

I have an 86 camaro that just yesterday, finally over heated. two days ago, when I shut my car off, I heard a humming sound in my car, lasting maybe 2 minutes, didn't really think anything of it, until yesterday.

drove my car maybe a total of an hour, no problems. on my way home, my check engine light came on, and i noticed my thermostat was reading just under 260 degrees. stop for 30 minutes, cool it down. restart it, let it run, notice that my temp is rising steadily, and check to see if my radiator fan is moving... no movement. call my boyfriend, he has me check the code. Code 14 ( high temperature sensed at engine coolant temp sensor). cool it down again, drive another 30 minutes, temp goes down to just about 220 degrees. stopped in traffic, check engine light again, then coolant started boiling and smoking, pulled over. my boyfriend noticed the coolant temp sensor grounded to a header, so we fixed that, let it cool down all the way.

STILL OVER HEATED IN 20 MIN.

now, from going through everything, this is the conclusion I've made:

my sensor must not be bad, since it read the temp.
my relay for the fan is working.

so, is it my fan motor that is bad, fan switch malfunctioning or the fan itself? what would cause either to stop working, and where do I start in fixing this?

Any help/feedback I'd greatly appreciate.

the sensor that shows the temp DOES NOT turn the fan on. it is correctly called the temperature SENDER i believe.

depends if u have single or dual fan

if u have single fan: the coolant temp sensor underneath the throttle body

if u have dual fan, the fan switch in the passenger side of the block

pic of the sensor under throttle body: look at the one with the YELLOW wire, the oen with the red arrow is not what you are lookign for

u overheated that thing bad check the oil make sure its not brown, get someone to do a compression test check the condition of the headgaskets.

the fan should come on around 235 degrees

remove the fan motor from the fan, and run 2 leads to the battery to test if the motor is working.

Thanks for the advice! found it was the motor for the fan itself... doing an oil change and checking the compression, make sure I didn't do any severe damage.. thanks again!
